Three days from now one of the greatest myths in boxing will be deconstructed in 12 rounds or less, probably less. The fiction: that Jermain Taylor is the face of the middleweight division for the next 10 years. I once believed he could have been, but his attitude after his lackluster and undeserved victory over Cory Spinks proved he doesn't have what it takes to be champ. After Spinks embarrassed him and lost a close decision, all Taylor could say was "only two words matter...And still, and still..." meaning he was still champ. He then made some BS statement about how he would fight the best guy "for the most money."

Well, on Saturday night, he got the best guy and the most money, not to mention an end to his brief and unspectacular reign in the division. Unlike Taylor, Kelly Pavlik is a hardworking, old-style fighter who never stops coming forward. He's not looking to box his way to a crappy decision, as his KO of his last eight opponents would attest. He wants a fight, and he will take the fight to Taylor and rip him in two.

Pavlik in eight rounds.

RANGERS NEED SANTANA

Word out of Minnesota is that the Twins are shopping Johan Santana. Word out of Texas needs to be that the Rangers will land him, regardless of the cost. Rumor has it the Twins want an established third baseman, at least two pitching prospects and possibly more. The Rangers have all of that, and more. At this point, the talk of acquiring Adam Dunn should cease. Santana is priority one. When will Texas ever have the chance to get a bona fide 20-game winner who shuts down opponents like Johan does?

We've got the players to pull it off. Hank Blalock can be the third baseman. He's back to hitting and it wasn't like the Rangers missed him while he was out. Eric Hurley probably goes, which would hurt a bunch. But hey, you've got to give up something to get something, and Santana is the sure thing. There's also Elvis Andrus, the shortstop acquired from Atlanta in the Tex trade. He will be good, but again, you've got to give up something. After that, you can throw in a catcher (Max Ramirez or Taylor Teagarden) so the Twins can move Mauer to the infield.

Mr. Daniels, get on the phone and make it happen.
