I don't hate Barry Bonds. He's a jerk, quite a bit arrogant, and doesn't really seem like a nice guy. Bonds is probably one of the greatest players I have ever seen. I've seen Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn, Griffey, and many other players who are or will be in the Hall of Fame. That doesn't mean I like them all.
Whether or not Barry used steroids is not the discussion here. This is about a guy, Marc Ecko, who has too much time and money on his hands.
He bought the record-breaking ball for $752,467. That is a lot of money. That could have really been a valuable piece of baseball history (not just monetarily), until he branded it.
As a publicity stunt, it is hilarious. For someone who appreciates baseball, it is an atrocity. What is the Hall of Fame going to do with that ball? If they choose to display it in its current form, it would be quite disrespectful to Bonds. Steroids or not, he hit it, so why ruin it?
They may clean it or something, but could you imagine Barry walking in there, and seeing that ball displayed with a giant * on the side of it?
Ecko bought the ball, he could do whatever he wanted with it, which he let people vote on. No big deal, but some thought should have come into this. It seems like he just wanted to do this to further give Bonds a hard time. Steroids or not, he was still a great hitter and probable Hall of Famer before all of this controversy started.
Whether or not Bonds used steroids is not the issue here, it's about what the Hall decides to do with it. For the sport, and for the fans, I hope they do the right thing.
