The NCAA did not expand the men's basketball tournament to 96 teams. (Thank you very much.) They did vote to expand the tournament to expand to 68 teams. That means four play-in games; instead of just one. Clearly the NCAA wants more games so they make more money. There is another option that is not being talk about.
Coach Bobby Knight was asked what he thought about expanding the tournament, and he was not in favor of it. He also mentioned that he do not like the post season conference tournaments. This got me thinking we can add more games to tournament without increasing the number of teams; if they get rid of the post season conference tournaments. This led me to my suggestion:
Have the NCAA Tournament formatted like the international tournaments. I am talking about the like the World Cup, the Olympics, etc.
Here is how I would see it work. The NCAA will group the 64 into 8 groups of 8 teams each. Every team will play the other teams in their group once. That will be a total of 7 seven games for each team. The top two teams in each group will go on to the Sweet 16. From there it will be a single elimination, like it is now.
Watch how the World Cup plays out this June. Let's not forget, the teams have already played qualifying games to get to the World Cup.
