I can buy the Giants as a big draw from the sense they are in the biggest television market, but I still don't think across the country, people think of the G-Men as a must-see game. They will get the NY market when the Giants play, but I'm thinking the middle of the country is not going to be into it simply because it is the Giants. One thing that blows my argument is the Giants-Cowboys Monday Night Football game from last year being the highest-rated cable event ever, but that probably had more to do with T.O. and the Cowboys.
If you didn't see Steve Downie's hit on Dean McAmmond, go on YouTube and check it out. I've never seen a hit like that in my life. Downie flies toward McAmmond like a missile and McAmmond hits the board and flops to the floor completely motionless. Then to top it off, the hit starts a big brawl and McAmmond is unconscious on the ice and players converge towards him and somehow, he didn't get a skate blade to the face or neck.
This guy Downie was probably a long shot to make the Flyers anyway, but there has to be some consequences with the hit. He not only left his feet to hit him, he made a Michael Jordan-esque jump-from-the-foul-line flight towards McAmmond.
It's a shame because once again, hockey makes news only for negative things. This didn't make national news because hockey is almost completely irrelevant in this country (unfortunately), but if this happened in football, it would be the talk of every radio station and newspaper columnist in the United States.
Luckily McAmmond only received a concussion and had movement in his extremities following the hit, which is amazing, but I'm still in awe at the violent nature of it. It wasn't like a player taking a stick to someone's face or neck, but from a purely hard check standpoint, it might be the biggest hit I've ever seen.
