They began the season, as everyone in baseball does, all even in the wins and loss columns, with the annual glimmer of anticipation, that feeling of "this could be THE season, no badly how we finished last year" accompanying their opening day ceremonies like the flowers that bloom each spring.
For the Mets, a season that began on April Fools Day ends on the last day of September with the possibility of finding out their season was a cruel April Fools prank that took six months to blossom. The Mets have gone through baseball's version of pregnancy, and all Mets fans are still holding their breath to see whether what is born is a bouncing baby playoff berth or a cold, long winter.
Unlike most of their American League foes, the playoffs have already begun for both the Mets and Phillies. The Phillies have actually been participating in the playoffs for the past two-and-a-half weeks. And participating particularly well. And today, these two teams put their seasons and the future of this season on the veteran arms of two wily forty-something lefthanders, one who will be entering Cooperstown and one who will be trying to lead the team that he rooted for as a boy into the promised land.
Whether one of these ancient old gunslingers has enough bullets left in the holster to lead their teams to redemption or whether they'll come up shooting blanks will be determined within hours. Or perhaps they'll both come out on top today, setting up yet one final showdown.
Is there any better scenario? Only if both teams win and the Padres lose. Let the games begin.
