I expect homerism from announcers on a local station promoting their team, which is probably paying their salaries. I expect national announcers on a nationwide network, whether it is broadcast or cable to try to at least attempt to be objective. This was not the case in Thursday's game one of the Western Conference semifinals between the number one seed San Jose Sharks & the number five seed Detroit Red Wings.
Let me be clear. I am a Sharks fan. I have lived my entire life in San Jose. I have never been to Detroit & have no desire to visit. That is besides the point. I work a 12 hour shift. I did not get home from work until 2 periods had already been played. I turn on my tv & from the way the announcers were talking it sounded like the Sharks were being killed by the Wings. Oh well, I said. Not a big surprise. Then I saw the score on the screen & the Sharks were winning!
Message to Versus announcers. Try to hide the fact that you are rooting for Detroit. It's unproffessional & insults the Sharks fans who were forced to watch your broadcast. I am well aware that tv networks always want east coast teams because that's where they are based & where the largest audience is. Doesn't matter. California is the largest state by population & what do we get? Local games at 6 o'clock or Sunday, even worse 5 PM.
Again, I understand local announcers on Comcast Sportsnet being homers, but not national announcers on a broadcast or cable network. Show some class. It's like the network showing baseball rooting for a Yankees-Dodgers World Series thus telling every other team "you're not wanted".
