Michigan to forfeit Penn St. win?
Penn State might end Michigan's winning streak over the Nittany Lions with a forfeit after Michigan reported using an ineligible player in four games this season, including that 14-9 win at Ann Arbor. Michigan athletic director Bill Martin made an announcement at halftime of Michigan's game this past Saturday that freshman defensive back Artis Chambers would not play again because of an eligibility issue, which was the fault of the AD's department, not coach Lloyd Carr. Chambers had played in four games on special teams, including against Penn State.

Sadly, the way this season is going this does not come as a surprise. It's like a bad joke that keeps getting worse. How many times are Martin and Carr going to screw up this year? Oversights, misjudgements, underpreparedness (is that a word?)...it's like they're trying to sabotage the team. Bill Martin made it pretty clear that he's going to stick with Lloyd Carr no matter how silly, stupid, and arcane his decisions are. In that case I say Martin's job should be on the line just as much as Carr's should be. Somebody at this school has to have some self respect. Is it the President? How long are these guys going to be allowed to screw up? Enough about that. Let's talk about the awful kicking game we've seen this year. During Monday's press conference Lloyd Carr said "Jason Gingell has proven in practice that he's an excellent kicker." Well whoopty freaking-doo. He's proven in games that he's a mediocre kicker. However, Lloyd did say that he might give backup K.C. Lopata an opportunity at kicker this week. And finally, to top it all off, Mike Massey is going to have season-ending knee surgery this week. It's bad enough that they were weak at the tight end position this year, but this just kills them. A tight end that can catch is a huge asset to a team, and Michigan has been blessed with some good ones over the past 10-15 years. I can recall games where the tight end was the leading receiver. This is a huge advantage, it's like having an extra receiver. However, UM has been suffering in that area this season. Massey has had just 4 receptions for 38 yards. I believe he still has a year of elegibility left, so hopefully he can make a comeback. That is unless replacement Chris McLaurin has a huge season after switching from special teams. I would say the Wolverines have a good shot against Eastern Michigan this weekend, but that's just what I said about Appalachian State. Eastern Michigan seems like a non-threatening low ranked team (one of the worst in the MAC)...but they run a spread offense. Unfortunately this is just what Lloyd and his defense were unprepared for against App. State and Oregon in weeks 1 and 2. Hopefully they've been practicing with this in mind, because even if they get a win this week they still have an excellent Purdue team to face next week. What offense does Purdue run you ask? A spread. Then again, maybe Lloyd can come up with yet another way to lose this season. Chuck Norris once challenged Lance Armstrong in a "Who has more testicles?" contest. Chuck Norris won by 5.
