Game 1 was a classic example of a pitcher's duel. The highly paid Big Z vs 2006's NL Cy Young Winner Brandon Webb. Webb dominated the Cubs during his 7 Innings of work. Through the first 5 Innings the Cubs were able to get their lead off man on multiple times and failed to get a run across. Zambrano flexed his muscles for a while until Stephen Drew hit a solo HR in the bottom half of the 4th Inning. That made the score 1-0 in favor of the young D-Backs.
As the 6th Inning came around the Cubs had stranded multiple runners and still trailed. Derek Lee led off the inning with a single. He was able to reach 2nd on a wild pitch from Brandon Webb while he was working on Aramis Ramirez. Mark Derosa later came up and walked. Then Soto walked as well to fill the bases up with Cubbies. Ryan Theriot came to the plate and reached on an infield single, thus scoring Derek Lee. The inning ended with Big Z getting himself K'd up.
The game continued to be tied at 1 until the 7th Inning. Carlos Zambrano was removed from the game after 6 innings of work on 85 pitches. Carlos Marmol entered the game to take on from there. On a 2-1 pitch, Mark Reynolds blasted a HR to deep left center to give the D-Backs a 2-1 lead. Marmol continued his troubles by giving up a walk to Cris Synder and a double to Ojeda. Conor Jackson entered the game as a PH for Brandon Webb, and delivered with a sacrifice fly to bring in Synder.
With a 3-1 lead, the Diamondbacks bullpen went to work. Brandon Lyon entered the game in the 8th and marched through a 1-2-3 inning. The Major League Leader in Saves on the season, Jose Valverde, closed the game out in the 9th and gave his team a 1-0 series lead over the Cubs. He indused a ground ball of Alfonso Soriano who finished the night with a squadoosh in the hit column. (0-5)
The Cubs shot themselves in the foot throughout the game. Getting men on early and not moving anyone over, and finishing on the night with only 4 Hits as a team. The Cubs, who came into the playoffs with the least amount of wins of any team in the NL playoffs, was favored to beat the inexperienced D-Backs. They were expected to be able to score some runs and shut down the D-Backs with their tough bullpen. And so far, the Cubs struggled to produce anything offensively and played right into the hands of the D-Backs. The D-Backs got their shut down performance from ace Brandon Webb, got just enough out of the offense, and handed the ball to their dominant bullpen.
Game 2 is Thursday night and features Chicago's Ted Lily vs Arizona's Doug Davis. Lily had faced these D-Backs back on August 25th. In 6 innings of work Lily only gave up 4 Hits and 2 ER in a losing effort. (3-1) 8 year veteran Doug Davis didn't have the best year boasting a regular season mark of 13-12 with an ERA of 4.25. He ended up getting the best of Lily in their August 25th matchup going 7 innings and allowing 1 ER and racked up 8 K's. This is going to be a solid matchup between two seasoned veterans at Chase Field. Lou Pinniella is going to have to light a fire under his team to get some runs on the board. In my mind, Game 1 was THE game that the Diamondbacks needed to get. Because beyond Brandon Webb, the confidence in their starters might diminish with the likes of Hernandez and Davis.

My Take: Cubbies get off the schnide and tie the series at a game a piece.
