Many months ago, the founder of this group welcomed the Fannation Community to this warm place, where many could discuss the literary art without feeling the need to hide and cower. In his loquacious mission statement, he said:
FanNation is a place, first and foremost, for sports. However, this site is more than merely a depository for the lesser-known Sports Illustrated writers, despite what the redesigned homepage would have you believe. Fan groups have always been the lifeblood of the FanNation community, bringing together groups of people with disparate opinions in discussion on topics of sport, politics, life... and yes, even literature.
In that spirit, welcome to the FanNation Book Club. Our mission here is to foster the exchange of ideas on literary subjects relating both to sports and the rest of the wide spectrum of published texts. We will be reviewing literature which is engaging to YOU, the fans out there. This group will be driven by your choices, your thoughts.
In words far less eloquent than Bigalke's, I am declaring that the mission originally set out in 2008 still applies. We are still a website that is based on its users. This site is not about the Rumours. It is not about Dan Patrick. It is about us, the people who ensure every day that there are Throwdowns to vote on and blogs to read.
I feel that in every individual, there is always room for personal enrichment. That's not to say that everybody is an idiot. Rather, whenever people go about their day to day lives, there is always something to learn. The day people stop learning is the day they die.
In that spirit, I bring you the Fannation Book Club. Every two or three weeks (I haven't decided yet), we will have a book to read. As opposed to the last one, we will emphasize sports literature, simply because that's the reason everybody is here on Fannation. After every two or three weeks, we will gather as a community and have a discussion about the book. We may not always agree; I'd be upset if everybody had the same opinion. However, we will always come out with something new learned.
The last Book Club lasted one issue. I hope that this is the beginning of a longer and more prosperous relationship.
