One full month of NFL football completed; three more to go. Here are the Surprises in my eyes...
AFC EAST
The surprise here is not how dominant the Patriot's have been it's the fact how bad the rest of the division has been. The Jets to me has been the biggest disappointment in the East at 1-3. This team had no running back or running game last year and yet finished 10-6 and made the playoffs. This year they have a #1 RB in Jones and can't run the ball and control the clock.
NFC EAST
Again it's not a matter of surprises but disappointments. The Eagles got burned for 12 sacks against the Giants D...Not good by a team that was suppose to be the class of the division with the Cowboys. They now sit at 1-3. It's clear that Westbrook is the guy that makes the Eagles Offence tick and not McNabb.
AFC NORTH
The Browns got their hats handed to them by the Steelers. They then outscored the Bengals, competed until the last play in against Oakland and last week beat the Ravens. The Browns were 0-6 in their division last year... so far 2-1.
The Browns have suddenly become respectable in the NFL. I never thought I say that...I'm not giving them much of a chance vs the Patriots, but they follow that with Miami, a bye then St. Louis. Come when October is over, they could easily be 4-3.
NFC NORTH
Brett Favre and 4-0 enough said. Favre knows that at 4-0 this might be his best and last chance to get to the Super Bowl or at least deep into the playoffs. The records are nice but winning is the real motivation here.
The Lions sit at 3-1 and the Bears at 1-3 ... That 10 win season that Kitna promised doesn't seem like much of a joke. The joke now is the QB position in Chicago.
AFC SOUTH
This could be the toughest division in football. The division features the Super Bowl Champs, a tough Jaguars team and a surprise team with the Texans. But the most impressive team so far is the Titans. They beat Jacksonville, they could have beaten Indianapolis and they smoked the Saints. Could the Madden Curse be over? I didn't draft Vince Young in my fantasy football league because of the Curse and the Sophomore Slump. But he's getting it done!
These Titans may be a big surprise in the AFC. The most important game may be the December 30th matchup with the Colts in Indy.
NFC SOUTH
Tampa Bay is 3-1 ... the Saints are 1-3 ... Those records you would have thought should be reversed but they are not. The Bucs now face The Champs in the Colts...(and with the Colts injuries they may just pull it out). Jeff Garcia has yet to throw a INT. After a few years of wandering from team to team has Garcia finally found a home?
AFC WEST
What happened to the San Diego Chargers? It's simple, although the personnel is the same and the systems are similar, they basically lost three head coaches (Schottenheimer, Cameron and Phillips) and are going to have to climb out of a big hole to make the playoffs.
NFC WEST
The progression and development of Alex Smith into a top tier NFL QB has hit a snag or should I say a shoulder... The 49ers for the time being seem to be Gore and nothing more.
And never underestimate the importance of a left tackle. The injury to Orlando Pace has caused a domino effect for the rest of the team Bulger out, Jackson out, St. Louis 0-4 are done.
