Today I attended a game featuring arguably the best pitching matchup of the season to this point, 2X Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum vs. leading Cy Young candidate Ubaldo Jimenez.
Now before I went to the game, I was well aware of what I was getting myself into, a low scoring affair where offense would be at a premium. And that was perfectly fine with me, but the Giants got shut out even worse than I was expecting. 3 hits 8 innings through the game. Of the Giants 5 hits by the end of the game, Pablo Sandoval had 3 of them. However, I left before the end of the 9th as I was in great need of a sweatshirt, so I left at the end of the 8th to buy a Giants sweatshirt.
Anyways, Ubaldo Jimenez, even after Roy Halladay's perfect game, in my opinion at least, solidified his reign as the best pitcher in baseball two months in. A 10-1 record, along with a ridiculous .78 era, and 70 Ks.
Many will still argue that Halladay is better, and they probably have a point, but after what I saw today, I just can't imagine it getting any better than that. Jimenez was throwing 99mph well into the ball game, as in, the 6th inning. Now I personally think Tim Lincecum throwing 95mph heat is impressive, especially given his size, but Ubaldo just has a cannon.
Timmy certainly didn't have his stuff today, marking his 3rd consecutive sup bar start. Lincecum only pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up 3 earned runs.
After he was taken out of the game, the Giants brought in the young reliever, Dan Runzler. His day couldn't have started off any worse. He attempted to pick off a runner at first, but made an awful throw to Posey. The ball bounced off the wall and into leftfield, scoring the runner from 3rd to make the game 4-0.
Speaking of Buster Posey, the young rookie who started at first base went 0-4 with a K. He started off his season 6-7, but since then, is 0-6.
And that was pretty much all she wrote at that point. After the 6th inning, it was just all Ubaldo. I knew he was good, but if this guy can pitch half this good from here on out, I'd be stunned if he didn't take home some hardware.
Til next time....
