This week's Game of the Week is (only by process of elimination) Washington (2-3 Overall, 0-2 Pac-10) at #14 Arizona State (6-0, 3-0). If there were a single game that would be close, then I would have picked it, but, sadly, there is not.
Tyrone Willingham's Washington Huskies have underachieved after taking down the Boise State Broncos. Running into Ohio State and USC in a three game stretch is going to do that to you. However, the Huskies still have the best freshman quarterback that I have ever seen play in the Pac-10, and QB's alone have a tendency to win games for you, and that is exactly what they need.
After taking (at that moment) #1 USC down to the last minute (on the fluky weekend where 8 of the AP Top 25 lost), UW looks to be turning their boat around. Their defense seemed to carry them through most of that game, and making themselves a potential pitfall for all of the Pac-10 members (remember, in that conference, all 10 teams play each other).
The Sun Devils of Arizona State, led by former Miami (FL), Oregon State, and pro coach Dennis Erickson, have gone undefeated this year, but have yet to play anyone of note. It may look that way this week also, but if you throw out the fact that UW has played two games against Top 10 opponents, then their record looks a whole lot better.
When you have to take a last minute field goal to beat Washington State, however, you know you got away with one. That may happen again this time, because the Sun Devils are probably looking forwards to the next two games (#2 Cal at home followed by at #9 Oregon), and that could cause more problems (like they really need them).
In all, I cannot truly see Arizona State mailing this one in after last week's debaccle in Pullman. Final Score, Arizona State 35, Washington 24.
The game happens 10:15 PM Eastern (7:15 for us west-coast folk) on Saturday, October 13.
