The latest edition of Truth and Rumors has a juicy little bit about Kobe Bryant possibly being traded to either the Chicago Bulls, Dallas Mavericks or Phoenix Suns. Recently, the chances of Kobe being traded at all took a quantum leap wheh Jerry Buss indicated his willingness to at least listen to trade offers. It might be awhile before a deal gets done but not, as Buss says, because offers may be inadequate. Rather, offers may very well be non-existent.
No team in their right mind will give up what it takes to acquire Bryant. Point blank. I think Buss is being delusional because of what he got for an aging Shaquille O'Neal a few years back (Lamar Odom, Caron Butler, Brian Grant and a 1st rounder.) I guess he forgot the part where he asked for Dwyane Wade and the Heat refused to trade Wade straight up for O'Neal. Notwithstanding the Celtics' understandable but totally reckless dismantling of their roster to acquire Kevin Garnett, here'e the best Buss can hope for.
Chicago Bulls- If the Bulls make the offer that Truth and Rumors is proposing (Gordon, Deng, Hinrich, Thomas and Nocioni) they will be the dumbest team in history. John Paxson has worked too hard to build a nucleus of good young talent with upside to dismantle it all now. I could maybe see if Hinrich and Nocioni were removed from that bunch and perhaps either Thabo Sefolosha and an expiring contract or two were added.
Dallas Mavericks- Any deal begins with Josh Howard, and I already don't like that. Howard is the perfect complement to Dirk Nowitzki and one of the more fundamentally sound players in the league. After that, there really is no deal, with Devin Harris being the only other valuable chip on the table. And no, I don't see them trading Dirk for Kobe.
Phoenix Suns- This one may have a shot, considering Shawn Marion wants out, and would cover much of the salary between the two players. The only question is what after that? Do you give up Leandro Barbosa? Boris Diaw? Giving up Amare Stoudemire would be insane, but I could see a Kobe for Marion, Barbosa, a young player like Alando Tucker and draft picks. It's workable.
Until next time, which may be after the great fights today (Holyfield/Ibragimov and Diaz/Diaz)
