Oh, where to begin with this one? All baseball fans have come to understand that come playoff time, we're going to get inundated with some overdose of "just for the playoffs" promotional madness. FOX started it a few years ago, cutting to the stands between every pitch to showcase a few stars from the upcoming fall lineup. TBS has taken it to a new level this year, with more impersonations from FrankTV than I have time to be amused by. Can you do the Invisible Man? Please? Just once? But the Dane Cook thing is too much. Because it's on BOTH channels...and because he just stands there, screaming vacuous things like, "The emotion!" to a bunch of people who've ALREADY DECIDED TO WATCH THE GAME! So what's he trying to sell us? We've turned on the TV. We've consciously selected the channel that will air the game. We know who's playing. So why does this moron feel it necessary to tell us WHY we're watching? The writing is 7th grade quality. The delivery is worse. I know why I'm watching...because I like baseball, not being yelled at by some fake Gen-Y slacker with perfectly messy hair telling me that baseball's fun! That there have been great plays! That it's all very, very exciting! That it all comes down to this! Ugh. If an idiot in a forest screams something that doesn't make any sense, does it make a sound? Unfortunately, yes. It makes a very bad sound that no one wants to hear. And I want it to go away.

Good blog.

Haha. Funny stuff. Yankee echoes the thoughts and words of every baseball fan in America right now.

October 16, 2007  10:06 PM ET

Larry, why do you always jump into perfectly civil conversations, and try to piss someone off?

The grownups are talking; go back up to your room.

Dane Cook is a bad comedian, and a bad baseball fan. I don't know if anyone else saw the Bill Simmons thing on ESPN.com, but apparently the guy is a big hypocrite. He wore a Yankees cap a few times, and both Yanks and Sox apparel at the SAME TIME! No fan of baseball does that.

October 16, 2007  10:26 PM ET

Not EVERY baseball fan in America. Some of us on the left coast have never heard of him. I've been watching the game for 30 years

October 16, 2007  10:32 PM ET

dane cook has never, and will never be funny.... he did it like a mercenary, for the money, and i don't think that one guy, wearing red sox paraphernalia, should be trying to sell us on the playoffs anyways, because that makes it look like MLB only supports the sox... i think they should have done that with a whole bunch of different comedians/actors/celebrities from all of the baseball towns... like billy crystal for the yankees, etc... that'd be a better thing...

October 16, 2007  10:37 PM ET

Thanks, Larry. I try.

Hemogoblin, it's like this...imagine going to the movies, and right after the lights go down some jerk jumps up in front of the screen and yells, "The movies! The drama! The laughter! The action! The movies are great...you should really watch the movies!"

I mean, wouldn't you just kill him?

October 16, 2007  10:39 PM ET

My doctor told me that Dane Cook may be resonsible for my ED. So he told me about Levitra.

October 17, 2007  01:27 AM ET

HATE DANE COOK not funny at all. Joke stealer as well.

October 17, 2007  06:39 AM ET

dane cook isn't that bad of a comedian, and if you didn't realize, those ads are also on TV when playoff games aren't going on, and they're on a few more channels. if you were dane cook, and you were being offered a ton of money to do a commercial about MLB playoffs, you would do it, right?

October 17, 2007  07:35 AM ET

Do you really think there are baseball fans out there watching other channels that DON'T know about the playoffs yet? And they need Dane Cook to tell them?

And your last point is just silly. The fact that he's being paid makes him funny? Huh? The post didn't say, "Dane Cook Isn't Being Paid Enough." It says, "Dane Cook Sucks."

October 17, 2007  08:54 AM ET

I agree with hemoglobin's idea of having fans of the teams do the ads. Billy Crystal for the yankees, somebody other than ben afleck for the sox, drew carey for the tribe, etc.
The wearing of both Yankees and Red Sox apparel is like having a bumper sticker reading honk if you love jesus, and another about paganism. Just doesn't work and confuses people. Not even as a halloween costume.

October 17, 2007  10:01 AM ET

I think the whole effort is ridiculous. My guess is that when networks get the rights from MLB to broadcast the games, they have to promise to promote them.

But to whom, and for what? The bulk of these promos are during games, preaching (loudly, and in a non-persuasive way) to the converted. But WE'RE ALREADY WATCHING, AND YOUR YELLING AT US DOESN'T MAKE US MORE INTERESTED.

I can understand TBS promoting that FrankTV show during games...you paid a lot to get a big audience, so you might as well use the opportunity to promote something that'll be airing when the games are over. Annoying? Yes. A reasonable business decision? Sure.

But not this Dane Cook crap. He doesn't say anything a baseball fan would say, and doesn't act like a baseball fan would act. It's just so fake. And I can't imagine it's convinced a single person to watch the games who wouldn't have already done so, but it might be so awful that it's scared a few away.

October 17, 2007  02:12 PM ET

I don't understand why everyone loves Cook. Or why he is so popular. He just yells alot. I guess that what's comedy now.

October 17, 2007  02:31 PM ET

Wasn't that comedy in the 80's, with Sam Kennison and Bobcat Goldthwait? I guess this guy doesn't just steal jokes; he steals them from dead people.

October 17, 2007  02:40 PM ET

Him and Mencia would be good pair.

Jason Sudeikis does a great Dane Cook impression, the second one is funnier than the first...

October 18, 2007  09:10 PM ET

See? That's what I'm TALKING about!

October 18, 2007  10:32 PM ET

DANE COOK IS IN MY LIVING ROOM AND HE'S YELLING AT ME AGAIN!!!

This just in...Dane Cook says there's only one October. Duly noted.
