I am sure 99% of the country will focus on the fact that Ohio State gave up 17 points rather than the fact they should focus on. That fact is Ohio State completely shut down the Spartan offense.
The Spartans came into Ohio Stadium with the 15th ranked offense in the country with 467 yards per game. The Buckeyes allowed 185 yards. Michigan State also boasted the 9th best rushing attack in the country with 242 yards a game. The Buckeyes allowed 59 yards rushing. Now if you aren't impressed with those stats, this one may make you a believer. The Spartans came in with the 18th ranked scoring offense in the country with 37 points per game. The Ohio State defense allowed 3, yes 3, points.
Now in my last blog I said I didn't believe Ohio State was the top team in the country. Well, I retract that statement. Ohio State is the best team in the country.
I don't understand why people say that Ohio State hasn't played a good schedule. They don't give credit to a defense that is ranked #1. They really don't, and I can't find a reason why not.
Four teams Ohio State has played this year are in the top 30 total offense wise. Michigan State is 15th, Minnesota 18th, Northwestern 28th, and Purdue 20th.
I won't give you the stats in a list. I will just do the average for you. The average yards a game those four teams accumulate is 450 yards a game. Ohio State has given up an average of 214 yards per game.
If that doesn't make you throw up then this will. The average scoring for those four teams is 33 points a game. Ohio State's defense has given up 17 points total, or 4 points a game.
Looking at even more stats you see Ohio State's next four opponents (Penn St, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan) are ranked 38th, 60th, 64th, and 50th respectively in total offense.
Outside of Penn State, which ranks 7th in total defense, the numbers go Wisconsin 57th, Illinois 52nd, and Michigan 37th.
So with those numbers in perspective I think the only team that can even put up a decent game against Ohio State is Penn State.
But there are even doubts about that. Penn State maybe ranked 7th in total defense but look who they have played. Florida Intl (118th in total offense), Temple (98th), Notre Dame (119th), Buffalo (85th), Iowa (107th), Illinois (64th), Michigan (50th), and finally Indiana at 42. And to top it all off they have lost 2 games.
Ohio State is not just beating teams, they are obliterating them.
I made that statement last week without knowing the stats. Hopefully after reading this you will agree with me, if not look in the next couple of weeks. I maybe a Buckeye fan people, but stats don't lie.

They should try playing in the SEC. That would be interesting to say the least...

30-7 over Minnesota is a moral loss, OSU whouldve won by at least 40.

Minnesota was averaging 31 points a game. They scored a TD. I don't really see how that is a moral loss.

I think Ohio st. is a true #1. The remaining schedule will tell all. We as Buckeye faithful, will simply sit back and watch Ohio st. run the table with absolute criticism (just like 2002) and we will be smiling at the end.

I agree with your comments.
Next week is going to be very, very tough for OSU. The Buckeyes need to play mistake free-game.
It is going to be a defensive struggle, I predict something like:
Ohio State 14
Pencilvania Stayte 9

Jym i don't see them keeping this up for a month. I mean Penn State, then Wisconsin, then Illinois, and then Michigan. That is a tought row to how.

Happy Valley at night is brutal. OSU has to bring their A game for an entire game. I doubt Chris Wells is going to have that kind of success 2 weeks in a row. OSU finally started their schedule this weekend, and if they're going to continue to play like this then they will lose to the Nittany Lions.

Although I not a buckeye fan... I have to agree: Ohio State should remain NUMBAH 1... (no matter what happens in the LSU - Auburn game). The team has shown up every weekend - played to a win, doesn't matter who they played or will play. I don't know if Ohio State has been tested in a difficult situation (will they fall apart if they fall behind in a bowl game?), but for now the BCS says they are #1. Note: I'm not a fan of the BCS system either... but for now it is the way we're determining who goes to what Bowl game - so I guess we just accept that fact for now.
