I was randomly thinking about the MLB playoff race recently and I began to think about how the MLB playoffs use only 8 teams, far less than the 16 of the NBA and NHL. I got to thinking about how a 16 team MLB playoff would work out, and I think it would be extremely interesting. Of course, the regular season schedule would have to be shortened to about 100-130 games so there would be enough time for more series, but the schedule right now is ridiculously long and I don't think that would be too big of a deal.

Before criticizing my proposal as absurd and too extreme just think about these series (based on the current MLB standings) beginning in late August.

American League

1 Yankees vs. 8 Angels

4 Rays vs. 5 Red Sox

3 White Sox vs. 6 Tigers

2 Rangers vs. 7 Twins

National League

1 Braves vs. 8 Cardinals

4 Rockies vs. 5 Dodgers

3 Reds vs. 6 Mets

2 Padres vs. 7 Phillies

I think that this format is definitely preferable to the long dragged-out end of the regular season and some of these matchups would be very intriguing.

MLB regular season maybe long, but I would argue that the NBA and NHL post season is to long.

Let's take the NBA for example (since I do not watch the NHL). 1.If one team plays all seven games in each round of the NBA playoffs, then that team will have played 28 games. That is just about as many games as a college basketball team regular season. 2. It take about two months to complete. The World Cup only takes one month, with 32 teams; with every team playing at least 3 games. 3. Below .500 teams can (and sometimes does) make the playoffs.

If MLB go to 16 team playoff, as you proposed, then you would definately give invites to below .500 teams (maybe not this year). Your proposal would give half the NL an invite to the playoff each year (NL has 16 teams), and over half of AL (the AL only has 14 teams).

I agree some of the match ups might be intriguing, but 16 teams in the post season is too many in any league.
