Sat through that entire debacle in South Bend yesterday. Other than those "Welcome Back, Kotter" throwback striped socks, I saw a decent USC team (which means still very talented) go Oliver Cromwell on the Irish 38-0. It wasn't even that close.
But it was still the Trojans' largest margin of victory over Notre Dame -- ever. And it hit me halfway through the third quarter: Charlie Weis must go. Not just on a diet. I mean go away.
Here are my five reasons:
1. It's one thing for his team to lack skill. But it also lacks passion. This is a big rivalry game. You had the green jerseys, the 30th anniversary of the '77 team. And what do the Irish do? They come out and play as if Manny Ramirez had given them a pre-game pep talk.
2. Weis' team has played much worse over time. Not mediocre over time. Just plain awful.
3. For a guy who is supposed to be an offensive guru, his nightmarish offense is Freddy Krueger meets Jason.
4. For a guy who is supposed to know quarterbacks, how is he in a situation where his QBs are completely ineffective guys who couldn't back up at big schools? Perhaps Clausen gets better over time, but Weis put himself in a position where he started a true freshman at QB -- who simply was not ready.
5. The most important reason of all. Notre Dame cannot be hypocritical. And, from a PR standpoint, it cannot be perceived as hypocritical. It let Ty Willingham go after three seasons. Now, whether you like it or not in either situation, it must do the same with Weis. If Notre Dame retains Weis for 2008, it must be asked: Why do you have a double standard?
Because that's exactly what it will be. The clock is ticking...

I didn't support the firing of Tyrone Willingham and I don't support Charlie Weiss getting axed either. Let's work through the bad year and see what happens after that. I'm more than willing to be patient and wait it out, no matter how bad it is this year. I'll get back to you in 2 years though.

I wen to SC' and I ma not saying this because ND go slammed. I think Charlie needs at least one (if not two) more year(s) and not because I enjoy seeing ND flap like a fish out of water.
I prefer a good ND team that does not hurt our strength of schedule, a good ND team that is over rated and SC beats them by 20+ points; but ,they don;t get slammed aroound by other teams until they play in a bowl game.
I actually enjoy the abpve scenario much more than seeing ND being the bunt of a Saturday NIght Live parody.

They should have kept Willingham instead of swapping for the "flavor of the month" They'll never have consistent success with that fornula.

Weis must go, this is not the NFL where you are rewarded the #1 pick for your display of uninspired garbage. Blue Chip recruits are probably not going to sign to play for a coach who puts out that kind of product. Unacceptable at Notre Dame, that team that lost to USC with the feeble looking uniform (accept that styles change, don't try to live in the past, it looks dumb), was not worthy of touching the Play Like Champions Today banner and Weis is to blame. Either send him packing or get used to being embarrased.

Most "blue chippers" are too dumb to get into Notre Dame. Give it some time, and when NBC starts thinking about taking them off the air, Notre Dame will reconsider the high standards that Notre Dame has and lower them. This will allow ND to get the better athletes, even if they arn't as smart.
If Charlie is smart, he'll do this stuff again to really make them consider going after the big recruits.
You never see a list of schools a player wants to go to consisting of Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Notre Dame. It consists usually of Rutgers, Ohio State, - hell anything in the north east part of the United States.
When they start getting talks about NBC dropping them, I'm sure they will reconsider the value of education, for better athletes.

Weis really needs to go.. the decision to not try a field goal late in the game was just foolish...i konw the wind ..yeah i head Weis interview after the game...pure bunk...not to even try was insane...he's a bad coach at best and bad is not good enough for college football. maybe there is a pop warner team out there somewhere who needs coach...

This guy has got to go!! I tried to stick it out with all the Clausen crap at the begining of the season but now I am convinced... Weis SUCKS! And what the hell is going on with his son wearing a headset on the sidelines this year. The AD needs to put this ego-maniac in his place! FIRE Charlie Weis!!!

I agree.....Weis MUST go!
One of his biggest blunders is having Ron Powlus as a coach. What a joke. Does anyone remember how bad he was. I know many will say Ron has some of the biggest numbers of a QB at Notre Dame, but he also played the longest. He is also the reason Lou Holtz left. Beloved Ron said he would stay on at ND for another year if Lou was not the coach. And we all know what happened next.
Now not all will agree with me, but......who drafted Ron after he left Notre Dame?
The only person willing to hire Ron is Weis.
I LOVE the Irish. I am from South Bend. I have the leprechaun surrounded by clovers tattooed on my arm and the Administration Building tattooed on my entire back. So trust me....I LOVE the IRISH!!!
But, for the love of Jesus.....FIRE WEIS!!!!!!

Notre Dame will never ever be an elite program again. It's over, it's been over for a long time. The Irish should be happy with a six win season. You have two problems the coach and the lack of talent. The Irish are slow and untalented. Don't you guys watch The 3 Florida teams? They all have guys who can flat out fly. Lack of team speed is apparent and it's a problem all the teams in that region suffer from. The whole Big Ten is slow. All that being said Weis should be fired because he hasn't delivered. He's a jerk remember that weasel move he pulled to get an extension. He is an alumnus but he held his own school up. Using supposed NFL intrest as currency for a ridiculous contract extension was reprehensible, that alone should get his **** canned. Think about it, how can a morbidly obese man preach discipline to young men when he can't practice it himself? Since N.D. is unathletic you need to be a disciplined team but your team is sloppy just like it's coach. Again teams reflect the personality of their coach especially in college. These are young men and Weis is a father figure. Weis is smart though to make Claussen his starter, to use the inexperience card and buy himself some more time. I can just hear him talking about Tom Brady and how he molded him every fan knows Brady was a fluke. It's only been in Weis's absence that the Patriots were prolific on offense. Oh I forgot to mention they were cheating the whole time, thats what you need to do film the other teams signals and then you will be unstoppable. At the end of the day Weis never strapped it on he has no comparitive experience. I know a lot of greats never played at a high level but they out schemed guys. He isn't innovative he doesn't do anything special this isn't the pro's with a draft. In college your coach has to be charismatic think Pete Caroll, Urban Meyer. You remember Meyer right? N.D. blew it with him cause you were cheap now your'e paying that gas bag Nick Saban money.

Davis and Willingham were the reason for lack of athletes ad recent poor seasons. They are two guys that should not have even been considered for the job. Davis was a cheerleader who never held his players accountable. Willingham was just flat out terrible; Worst recruiter in the country (lazy), and lacked discipline. Meyer or any other coach would have went through the same struggles Weis did in the past two years. With Weis back operating the offense, they have looked sharp. The issue is the defense. If anyone should get criticized, it should be Brown and Tanuta (so called, Great Defensive Coordinators). If Notre Dame does go on to fire Weis, they better be sure that Meyer will take the position, if he doesn't, and they hire (Kelly, Peterson, or anyone of that caliber) they will be back to the Davis and Willingham days.
