Something almost feels wrong this week. Only three top-10 teams lost. It was a nice vacation this week. I made it to the Penn State - Wisconsin game, Rutgers - South Florida, and West Virginia - Mississippi State. Not much to say about the rankings this week. Enjoy.

These rankings are a little more scientific. I devised a simple formula for each team which was (2 X wins X defeated opponent wins) - (losses X defeated by opponent losses). For teams that beat a Division 1-AA team, the win did not count and is not reflected in the record. And, for teams that lost to a 1-AA team, they were credited with a loss to the worst team in D-1.

                Team-record (prior week)                           Points

  • 1. LSU (7-1) (1)                                               376
  • 2. Ohio State (7-0) (4)                                     308
  • 3. Oklahoma (7-1) (3)                                      304
  • 4. Virginia (7-1) (8)                                           263
  • 5. Arizona State (7-0) (2)                                   238
  • 6. Oregon (6-1) (10)                                         238
  • 7. Michigan (6-2) (11)                                       236
  • 8. Boston College (6-0) (7)                                204
  • 9. South Florida (5-1) (5)                                   198
  • 10. Penn State (6-2) (17)                                  182
  • 11. Kentucky (5-2) (6)                                       182
  • 12. Kansas (6-0) (20)                                        180
  • 13. Texas (6-2) (13)                                         172
  • 14. Missouri (5-1) (22)                                      169
  • 15. West Virginia (6-1) (19)                               167
  • 16. Florida (5-2) (--)                                         162
  • 17. Air Force (5-2) (--)                                       150
  • 18. Texas A & M (5-2) (--)                                 150
  • 19. UCLA (5-2) (--)                                           150
  • 20. Auburn (5-3) (12)                                        142
  • 21. Alabama (5-2) (--)                                      140
  • 22. Wake Forest (5-2) (--)                                 132
  • 23. South Carolina (5-2) (9)                              132
  • 24. Wisconsin (5-2) (--)                                    120
  • 25. USC (6-1) (25)                                           116

Dropping out was Virginia Tech, California, Cincinnati, Illinois, Texas Tech, Michigan State, Tennessee.

And the Bottom Five

  • 1. Northern Illinois (1-7) (1)                             -238
  • 2. Louisiana-Lafayette (1-7) (3)                       -180
  • 3. Iowa State (1-7) (2)                                    -176
  • 4. Idaho (0-7) (4)                                          -168
  • 5. Utah State (0-7) (--)                                   -154

There will definitely be a 2 loss team in the BCS, maybe even a 3-loss team. It's early bowl projection time - insert random guess here.

Fiesta Bowl - Oregon vs. Kentucky

Orange Bowl - Boston College vs. South Florida

Rose Bowl - Arizona State vs. Michigan

Sugar Bowl - LSU vs. Virginia

BCS Title - Ohio State vs. Oklahoma

Nice vacation this week? I was at the Penn State game too and it was cold as hell! I guess it doesn't help though that I forgot my bag with all my clothes in it for the weekend and in result had to run to the walmart and downtown to buy more clothes...

Interesting formula, but I'm not sure why you double the win strength. If anything, losses are the thing that should be doubled, given the impact of a loss (that being said, LSU would still be a runaway #1.) As for my predictions, I see WVU sneaking past South Florida in the Big East/BCS. I don't see the Bulls getting through the rest of their schedule unblemished (includes UConn, Cincy, Pitt, and L'ville). I also see Oregon taking the Pac-10 and the Rose, and either Michigan or Ariz. State not being in at all, in favor of the winner of Kansas/Missouri on 11/24.

Buck,

I doubled up the wins because I wanted to reward teams for beating good teams.

Doubling the losses is a different way of approaching it though. I ran the numbers quick and came up with just about the same rankings.

The best part about doing it your way is that Virginia Tech moved up to #19 and Michigan dropped down to #12.

Very intresting way to figure rankings. I love my Sooners, but am unsure if they are ready to goto a NC game this year. The play has been unconsistant so far. When they are on they look super, but they sure can play badly too. Guess well just see how the rest of the season plays out.
