I have never attended an NFL practice session so I can't say firsthand what takes place during the preparation for a regular season game.  I can assume however that whatever that preparation consists of, the San Francisco Forty-Niners didn't do it.  With two weeks to prepare for a team coming off a Monday Night road game, the Niners were nothing less than pathetic Sunday in the Meadowlands.

Trent Dilfer did John Brodie's number twelve a disservice and should issue a public apology.  I can't single out Dilfer without mentioning the porous offensive line.  Dilfer and the o-line worked together to ensure that the Giants had at least one defensive touchdown.  Did Dilfer not see Osi Umenyiora overloading the left side of the line?  Do the Niners have an audible in their game plan?  Who am I fooling?  What game plan?!?  I also cannot allow Dilfer's fumble when attempting to hand off to Frank Gore on that stretch play to go unmentioned.  I may be optimistic (hey, I'm a Forty-Niner fan) but I think that fumble destroyed any momentum the team had.  Dilfer overthrowing Vernon Davis early in the second half on that go route was also very painful to see.  In a preseason blog, I predicted that with Dilfer at the helm this ship would be blown out of the water.  I hate it when I'm right about that kind of thing.

The guys on the other side of the ball aren't without blame.  The line of scrimmage was like an impassable boundary for the Niners' d-line.  I had to check to see if Bryant Young had retired during the bye week.  Brandon Jacobs looked like he was doing a pretty good Jim Brown impersonation against the Niners.  I liked seeing Patrick Willis led the team in tackles.  I just wish more of them took place near the line of scrimmage.  The Giants have several offensive weapons for which a defense must scheme.  I know that Plexico Burress was tied for the lead in touchdown receptions coming into the game.  That is no reason to leave Amani Toomer alone in the back corner of the endzone though.

I would relish in the fact that the Niners could get some good, young talent early in the draft if they continue this streak but, they traded their 2008 first round pick to the Patriots so they could acquire Central Michigan's Joe Staley whom Michael Strahan repeatedly beat like a rented mule.  I hate these seasons when before October is out all I have to root for is a Cowboys loss.

Nice blog. I agree with pretty much everything you said. Man, I can not stand losing like this. That does not mean I will abandon ship any time soon.

When the Niners lose, I can not watch NFL highlights or Sportscenter until Friday or Saturday. Its the same stuff over and over...the offense is inept and the defense is a little better that average.

I know that we are much better than the critics think. I think our major problem is concentration, we keep shooting ourselves in the foot, not sure if the coaching staff is addressing the mental part of the game.
