So the trade deadline came and went and as opposed to my initial blog talking about the white sox being sellers, they were buyers. All be it uneducated buyers but still buyers.
The day before the MLB trade deadline the white sox landed Edwin Jackson from the Diamondbacks for a pair of young pitchers in Daniel Hudson and Halmberg a Double A pitcher. Now while this was done with the specualtion of flipping him for Adam Dunn, a much needed left handed bat with some pop, that trade died on the vine due to the reported reluctance of the Nationals to give up Dunn for Jackson.
So lets first look at the positives of this trade..... the White Sox got Edwin Jackson, a veteran pitcher with a no hitter under his belt and a pretty much middle of the road pitcher for the back half of the rotation.
The rest of this trade. The Sox give up a young pitcher that had a great record in the minors and made 2 starts, a guy that pitched very well in spring training and only lost the 5th starter spot to Freddy Garcia because of the years of service and contract situations. While Kenny Williams has been able to pull off some good deals and surprise people with his additions, this one seems to hurt the Sox more than help them. Even if this was done with the intention of flipping Jackson for Dunn, why wouldnt they offer the same package to the Nationals for Dunn that way if it falls through, which this one did, they would have a young pitcher with great upside and have control of him for a few years with a very low salary as opposed to the 8.25 million owed to Jackson for next year. This just reaks of the Sox jumping the gun because at one points the Nats were in love with Edwin. Now, we are stuck holding the bags. Not a good call at all. Lets hope that they can make a trade now that wont get blocked by teams like the Twins and such.
ADDITION: After Edwin's first outting he looked very strong. Giving up 9 hits and 1 run while striking out 6. Reportedly Don Cooper found a hitch in his delivery and said that with that being fixed, he will be fine. Looks to have improved his control. 1 outting in the books and it was a decent one. Lets keep our fingers crossed that he can continue to perform.
