First, let me get a few facts out of the way:

1.  Fannation has definitely gone down hill dramatically in the last year.  I say "year" because I have only been around for a few years and the decline has been significant in this amount of time.  I would bet though, that "long term" users would suggest the site has been suffereing longer than that.  However, I can't comment on that.

With the obvious dupes, the spammers for sneaker sales, questionable voting, year old TD's still on the board, etc.... things are pretty stale.  Truth & Rumors go all weekend without many updates and many of the stories are ridiculous.

The site seems like it is being run by 12 year old girls from Kenya.  Does staff realize all the problems they have?  Are they just apathetic or simply pathetic?

2.  Because of this (and other reasons I suppose), we have lost many good/active users.  Guys like David, Porkins, Dyhard, Baunded, etc... have all disappeared for the most part.  It's a shame, because in their place we have more sightings of Roy, Deacon, Luckystrike, etc... wasting space and annoying us all.

3.  The "vets" I speak of, were all great members of the site and have immense sports knowledge.  Kudos to them in that regard.

HOWEVER!  When I come to the board today, I see several of the aformentioned "greats" spamming the board and whining like children.  Spamming the board with your stupid "TD's" and advertising for another site is only adding to the crap around here.  I'm sure your website is a great place, but why wouldn't the mods delete your advertising?

If you went into a Best Buy with a picket sign advertising for Circuit City, I'm guessing you would be asked to leave.  If you went into a restuarant handing out coupons for a competitor, you would be asked to leave.  It's common sense.

You complain that the mods don't do their jobs (which I agree, they don't), but then when they do, you complain more.

I'm a little disappointed in the actions of some of the "greats" on here, because instead of being legends and disappearing while on top, you have come back to sully your name.  It's akin to Rice's time in Seattle or Jordan's in Washington.  I fail to see what you can accomplish by acting out.  Sure you might garner a few members to jump on your bandwagon, but you also tarnish your legacy for even more.

But hey, what do I know.  I'm just some random guy behind a computer screen who thought you guys were pretty impressive in terms of sports knowledge and whatnot.  Now it just seems like you guys are smarter versions of Lucky, Deacon and Roy.

i checked out the website and its actually ok, there are no TDs but it is way more active than this

i hate to see this website go so downhill but we have to face the fact that the other place is becoming the new FN

Quite possibly, I don't know. What I do know, is that they are going about this in a poor way. It's making them seem childish and elitist in the same stroke, which is really hard to accomplish.

Okay, please enlighten me. I wasn't on much this morning. What went on exactly?

TONS of spam TD's by a few of the "better" people on the site... basically go read the Porkins TD with a billion comments if to get an idea of their grievances. Legitimate complaints for the most part, but handled in a poor way.

Look at the TDs over the weekend here. Some of them 2 years old, This site sucks.

Then leave.

I agree fvkasm2x, 100%. Good blog.

I've seen this kind of web drama happen before, on other sites. Some people leave. Most people stay. The short-term impact is notable... only because there is a buzz. The long-term impact is negligible... because the site actually continues on after people leave.

I will miss the members that leave - friends and others I just plain have respect for. However, I do not share their cause and see no reason to leave.

I'd like to be the first person to say I'm not going anywhere.

I can't believe he jeprodised 100,974 comments. What on earth is going on?

Hey everyone,

I am one of the moderators here and wanted to hear some ideas you all had about how we can improve the site. This is your chance to be proactive and help make the site potentially better. No, the site isn't perfect but all sites carries certain challenges. I assure you that we care a lot about your opinions. I actually am one of the members who have been on a long time and used to compete in TD's a ton, along with blogging. So it means a lot to me personally to make sure you all enjoy the site. Feel free to send me a fanmail or email me at adamleetlu@gmail.com

Thanks!

Thanks for rhyming off your creditials as a member.
But if you were still in touch, you wouldn't need to leave a comment like this soliciting a list of issues.
This is no different that all the other ambiguous comments you leave.

You're acting like people haven't already been giving out ideas for months --- years.

Where is the follow up to ANY suggestion that you get?

What are YOUR ideas to fix things?

Why haven't YOU written down ONE HUNDRED suggestions by now and reported back to the members on WHY certain things can't be implemented and what things can?

Who are the people that you consult with about TDs these days?
Your ambiguous comments soliciting suggestions seem like you don't already know what the issues are or how to begin to fix them.

I'm a member and I don't need to have an open mic night to my gmail (why not an SI address? - very odd) to know what many of the key issues are and how to very easily fix some things. There are dozens of social networking sites to compare things to and it's easily to clean up a lot of the nonsense.

Most of your comments just say things like "Be nice people" but in some long winded fashion and in some thread that most members won't see.

Can you delete the non-arg TDs or not?
Can you delete the old BS TDs from a year ago or not?

Will you at least EXPLAIN to members why their is site lag? Sometimes people are as frustrated about things if they at least understand why things are as they are.

Honestly, why don't you delete the dupes? Can't you see them? I can give you a list of 100 of them and I probably don't have the software you do.

Seriously, man. Be straight.

But also on a less serious note, why do sign your comments again at the end of them?
We can see your name under your avatar.

I'm not trying to bash you. I mean all of this constructively.
I'm not jumping ship like others. I enjoy reading TDs and doing occasional TDs and I promote the hell out of this site.

But the hands-off approach that you perpetuate with comments like this is frustrating and seems disingenuouis.

Help us out, man.

*there, not their --- and probably a dozen other spelling/grammar errors, but oh well.
Maybe Dj and the spellcheck C-O-P-S will let me slide on this one.

Well written Yoda...I'm curious to see what response is offered to many of your points.....

August 24, 2010  07:51 AM ET

YODA! YODA! YODA! YODA!

<Holds up protest signs>

August 24, 2010  08:36 AM ET

Good blog Batman and good post Yoda.
The mods response (or lack there of) is a big factor in the defection to the other site. When you send them a message, you get a response. The only response I have received is a removed comment, and when I ask why no response.

The only mod who ever responded was Red Hat but it appears he is gone.

August 24, 2010  09:57 AM ET

Agreed, Kasper.

I call Dyhard and Porkins "friends" as much as I can with people on internet. Both are on Facebook and I have added them to my "friends list.". Yesterday was the "Armageddon" of Fan Nation and it shocked me. It was like newbs had possessed several veterans on here.

I even commented to Dyhard on why he had to have his account deleted, he just could NOT come back. Well he was hell bent on having his account deleted. Yesterday was about as bad as the juvenile attacks on Cass-iroy but ten times worse. They were attacking the very site some of us have come to look forward to log onto every day.

For me its my own personal version of "Cheers." A place I can come to do what I do: Be a TD Wh0re and escape from the reality of the world for a little while by arguing sports.

We lost a lot of good people yesterdabut more shocking to me was the way those people acted, it was something I had never seen out of them. At least with me I have had occasional meltdown before.

Still in shock.

Yoda for mod!!! Yoda for mod!!! Yoda for mod!!!

*But here is guessing a free subscription to SI for a year or 2 and certain perks will be worth the headache. Being a mod is like an unpaid internship. Lot of grunt work for heavy duty workload*

August 24, 2010  10:02 AM ET

*will not be worth the headache*

Reaching for the coffee.
