Lane Kiffin might not have been happy about the Trojans' first game under his leadership - I believe "embarrassed" and "disappointed" were his exact words - but I just happy they started out with a win.
I mean, come on LK, yeah your defense looked like it'd never played before but, um, it actually hadn't (senior cornerback Shareece Wright, the "veteran" of the secondary, had three starts).
And a 13-point win over Hawaii, even if it was only 13 points and should've been more because it was only Hawaii, is still a heck of a lot better than a loss. Imagine the fun they would've had in Tennessee if that had happened.
There's a lot of work to do if USC wants to be successful the rest of the season, especially with the talent in the Pac-10 this year, but there were plenty of good things about last night's game as well, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

I only saw the highlights of the game. College teams usually play bad in the first game of season, because they don't play preseason games. QB Matt Barkley look pretty good for a sophomore. I am waiting to see how they play @ Minnesota in two weeks.

I think USC's offense came out firing and was better than I expected. But what has happened to this Defense? THey used to be the best in the nation and just two years ago had like 6 first round picks on the defensive side of the ball. If they can't fix up that D, you can count on Stanford, Oregon, Arizona, and possibly Washington and Oregon State stomping on the Trojans.

Yes those spoiled brats who stayed with a program when they had the chance & right to leave USC & play elsewhere....knowing full well going into the rest of their college careers will not have a chance to even look at a bowl game. That said no one can be sarcastic when saying that our secondary is absolutely horrible.....in fact, not impressed with the D side of the ball at all!!!

Totally agree with you. Minnesota will be a better measuring stick than Hawaii, but I'm still more worried about other games down the road. If they play well against the Gophers, I'll be more confident about the rest of the season.

This isn't the first year the defense struggled. Last year, after losing so many guys to the NFL (most in the first round) there was a definite dropoff. I expected things to be rough this year, between the new coaching staff and new players, but you're right, it has to get better or it will be a LONG, painful season in the Pac-10.
