First off, before I begin, let me just say that I know that both of these coaches are in different sports so it "cant really be compared." But I'll try.
Okay, lets begin with last year, the New England Patriots have just beaten the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers go 14-2 but lose in their first playoff game. A few days later, San Diego fires their coach, Marty Schottenheimer. This guy just went 14-2 and coached the league MVP, devolped your quarterback and got one of the best TEs in the game, Antonio Gates, the ball. Sure, he might not have a great history in the playoffs, but if it hadn't been Earnest Byner's fumble at the 3 yard line when Marty's Cleveland Browns where driving for the tying touchdown, maybe he has a ring, or a SuperBowl appeareance. Or, how about a year later, 1987, this time in Cleveland for the AFC Championship against the same Denver Broncos. This time Cleveland was winning late, but John Elway leads his team 97 yards and a touchdown with little time remaning. Two perfectly good oppurtunities, slipped away. However, if you want to fire him, fire him. Just dont replace him with the NFL's main punchline for jokes, Norv Turner. This guy could turn the New England Patriots or Indianapolis Colts into a laughingstock. Norv Turner is a dumbass, mediocore at best coach.
Now for the Torre situation. Most people have heard it by now after the Sox knocked out his Yankees. Ill just shorten it up a little. He's been there 12 years. Led them to the playoffs every year. Won 4 World Series Rings and 6 American League pennants. Is known for winning with the Yankees as he is for "digging for gold" in his left nostril. He was one of the many "faces of the franchises" for the Yankees. They lose to the hated Sox and a few days ago Torre was fired. He, just today, signed a 3 year, 13 million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. George Steinbregnner hired Joe Girardi to replace the legend. Girardi played for the Yankees and won a few titles. Managed the Flordia Marlins two years ago and won Manager of the Year, despite failing to make the playoffs. He was fired at the end of the year (something about not getting along with the front office personell) He went into broadcasting and is now managaing the Yankees.
The Chargers situation isn't so encouraging. Turner started out 1-4. Not exactly 14-2 material, wouldnt you say? Maybe the "Evil Empire" in New York is too powerful and strong to fail. But, with no Alex Rodriguez and possibly Roger Clemens and Andy Pettite leaving. Oh yeah, and some guy named Rivera who did something "clutch" for the Yankees could be leaving too.
We'll just have to wait and see...
opinions?
