Under a minute left, score tied at 28-28. Notre Dame's football at Navy's 25 or so. 4th Down and about 6. The logical choice here would be a field goal, right? Right? Charlie Weis wouldnt go for it and hand away a win for overtime would he? Would He?

Well, he did, and I'll tell you one thing, I wasnt the only Fightin' Irish fan screaming cursing at my television screen. That was the stupidest, dumbest, most mediocore decision in all of coaching decisions. Period. I dont wanna hear any complaints or reasons why he wouldn't kick the ball. Because there is none legitamite enough. Was he trying to let Navy win? Did Notre Dame feel bad for Navy. I have no clue. All I know is, Notre Dame has embarrassed themselves even more with a loss to the Naval Acadmey. I mean, the Midshipmen ran all over the Irish defense, but Notre Dame played some pretty decent offense and hung with Navy. But, a stupid coaching move cost them, and put them at a dismal 1-8.

any thoughts?

I'll add to your diatribe and question why Weis didn't kick the field goal in the first quarter, choosing instead to try a fake. Knowing Navy can chew clock, you realize you're only going to get the ball 4-5 times a half. You need points on the board.

By kicking the field goal, you raise your lead to 10-0, a two possession game. At this point, instead of having a "match-a-score" contest, eventually Navy will have to break away from the run and pass more than 2 times a half.

While this was only one "mistake" in strategy (which would eventually be repeated, as you stated, in the last minute), it's disappointing that the play-calling all game allowed for so many 4th downs and the jeopardy associated with having to make so many conversions.

In my own blog, I suggested in tongue-in-cheek jest that the Irish would finish 1-11. I never conceived that I would actually be right. To lose to a team you outweigh, tower over, and, at times, out run in speed is something that seriously kicks whatever hope you have left right out of you.

The players executed as best they could. But I agree with you, could the coaching claim the same?

I thought Charlie Weis looked very nice in his sweatshirt. He really knows how to dress up for a game.

Weis should be fired for that choice. I feel bad for the kicker. He could have made that.
