Nebraska has a chip on its shoulder when it comes to Texas.

The Longhorns, bullies with big horns to fit their big egos, have their share of enemies in the Big XII, and other conferences, but the Huskers are especially bitter. Tough losses in title games, most recently the last second of the 2009 Big XII Championship game, rubbed the proud program the wrong way once and for all.

In the offseason, Nebraska decided to leave the Texas Conference for the Big 10. Forget Big XII loyalty. Forget waiting to make a move until Texas decided if it would go to the Pac-10.

The Huskers decided to take control of their own fate and packed up their Blackshirts for the Texas-free Big-10. Better television deals, better chance at winning championships since they're not contending with the Big XII South winner. Take that, Texas.

The Huskers just had one last parting shot. October 16th. A big game in Lincoln. The last time they'd face the Longhorns in Big XII play. The last chance to say sayonara and get payback for last season's last-second steal.

A shot at "REDemption."

The Longhorns had already lost to their Red River Rival Oklahoma and had been inexplicably beaten silly by the hapless UCLA Bruins. To say they looked out of sorts without Colt McCoy and Co. would be an understatement. With those two losses, their season had been turned upside down. And with Nebraska dominating its schedule thanks to the fleet feet of freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez, it looked like this might finally be the Cornhusker's chance.

Nebraska had :01 shirts and bracelets made during the offseason, funneling all its energy and anger toward this one game against Texas. After all the hype and all the build-up for the "Red Out," Texas drove its burnt orange bulldozer through Lincoln like it was business as usual.

It wasn't Martinez who wowed spectators with his runs but Texas' Garrett Gilbert, who showed off his speed as Nebraska's run game was shut down. The Huskers didn't score a touchdown until late in the 4th quarter and were held to just 202 yards on the day.

The box score shows the teams were remarkably even, but the slightest differences went in the Longhorns' favor. Time of possession was 29:50 for Nebraska, 30:10 for Texas. Nebraska had 13 first downs; Texas had 14. Nebraksa was 5 of 16 on 3rd down conversions; Texas was 7 of 16. Nebraska's Martinez was 4-of-12 for 63 yards; Gilbert was 4-for-16 for 62 (though he also racked up 71 on the ground).

In their last meeting as conference foes, the Big Red was a big flop, and Texas proved what it had always believed: that they'll always be at least a little bit better than Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers didn't get to sashay out of the Big XII on top of their game, leaving the Longhorns stunned in their wake. They didn't finally beat the big, bad bully: they got stuffed in a locker on their last day of school.

As the Huskers slunk away to Big 10 territory, the Longhorns' parting message was clear.

Nice try, y'all. But you just don't mess with Texas.

Good blog, but Texas isn't what it used to be.

The last few games since I wrote this have REALLY proved your point about Texas, huh?
I don't like Texas, so I'm rather enjoying their season but man. Even I never imagined they'd have this much of a down year
