As a Red Sox fan since before most of you were born I have seen the Red Sox keep players during the twilight of their careers and it was plain stupid.
Papelbon is right. Get him now. It hurts the Yankees as well as helps the Sox.
Money isn't a problem. The Red Sox have it. They also have tremendous clubhouse leadership who would not let A-Rod get away with his ego-centric garbage. Ortiz and Varitek would take care of that.
Just look at the potential lineup for next year.

ARod has no rod in October when it counts most. If he is worthy of the money he wants he should be able to bring a championship. None yet with 3 teams down and counting. Sox got two without him and can continue to do so. As for comparing the Sox to the Yankees. Bull. Take the fee to negotiate for Dice K out of the mix and the Sox are no where near the Yankees payroll, yet are once again World Series Champs. Yes, they are doing what all other teams try to do and want to do, get help via the free agent market, but they are also the best organization at building their farm system. Everyone says it. All the other GMs.They, and the rest of the league, have no choice. That is the state of the game now. The only difference is that many other teams cannot afford it so all the sour grapes come up. I don't hear comparisons of the Angels to the Yankees, or Cubs, Dodgers, etc. There are a number of teams out there using free agency to their benefit. They have no choice. Where is that comparison with the Marlins when the bought to World Series Championships, D'Backs? Strange how those who cannot win like to knock the ones that do.
