May the BCS Standings die a horrible and painful death this weekend.  I mean - I want to see a Mad Max-style apocalypse to the system.

Check out the slate of games for our unbeatens.  Of course Boise State found their thrill on blueberry hill.

  • No. 1 Auburn at Mississippi
  • No. 2 Oregon at USC
  • No. 4 TCU at UNLV
  • No. 5 Michigan State at No. 18 Iowa
  • No. 6 Missouri at No. 14 Nebraska
  • No. 8 Utah at Air Force

Oooo yea.  Die BCS rankings, DIE!

Season Schedule

Double Secret Probation

Ohio State over Minnesota

Move along.  Nothing to see here.  I'm sorry... I'm going to have to confiscate that camera and cell phone.  Recording devices are not permitted.

The BYE

Off Wisconsin!  Off Wisconsin!

The Intriguing

Penn State over Michigan

We have an interesting twist to the age old question: What happens when an unmovable offense meets an underperforming defense?  To conduct this experiment, I have collected 22 banana slugs and painted 11 of them Blue & White and 11 of them Maize & Blue.  I placed the banana slugs onto an electric football game table (remember those?).

What could Cam Newton do with Bo Jackson in the backfield?

I buzzed them on the table for an hour and a half.

It wasn't pretty.  Not at all.  But I am sick and tired of believing in the Wolverines.

Indiana over Northwestern

Northwestern.rivals.com had an interesting lead:

You have to go all the way back to 2001 to find an Indiana-Northwestern game that was decided by more than one score, and the last three games have been decided by one, two and three points.

Also, Northwestern's last 4 games were decided by one score or less.

So I flipped a coin a few times.

  • Indiana over Northwestern
  • Northwestern over Indiana
  • Northwestern over Indiana
  • Northwestern over Indiana
  • Indiana over Northwestern
  • Northwestern over Indiana
  • Indiana over Northwestern

Screw this.  This is boring.  I just know that old Templar from Indiana (Jones) is going to tell me I chose Wisely.

Illinois over Purdue

Suddenly, Illinois' three losses to Missouri, Ohio State, and Michigan State don't look too shabby.  the Illini have taken care of business against the rest of the schedule in impressive fashion.  Purdue is 11th in the Big Ten (or first in the Little 1?) in offense and 7th in total defense.  Illinois should have no trouble at home with Purdue.

Game of the Week

Michigan State over Iowa

Help us, Michigan State.  You're our only hope.

Help us, Michigan State.  You're our only hope.

Forget that old "One Game at a Time" mantra.  Michigan State knows that Minnesota, Purdue, and Penn State don't present a significant road block towards an undefeated season.  On the other hand, they know Iowa does.  MSU has just about clinched a BCS berth (win or lose) with the previous win against Wisconsin and avoiding the Buckeyes.  But the Spartans want to rub the Rose Bowl appearance into the face of TUDS in the TSUN.  The Spartans want a shot at the National Championship (which I think they'd lose badly to any of the top teams).  They just have to get by the toughest test of the season and win in Iowa.

No pressure.

The key to this game is for the Iowa defensive line to handle the running game with only the front four.  Wisconsin's bruisers only pounded out 147 tough yards so I expect the Spartans to struggle with the running game.  However, they D-Line only sacked Tolzien once and allowed an efficient 20-26 performance with those 20 receptions spread among 10 receivers.    If the D-Line allows Kirk Cousins the time to step through all of his progressions, it will be a long day for the Iowa secondary.  The Badgers were 6 of 12 on third down against the Hawkeyes and MSU is more dangerous offensively.

I feel in my gut that MSU is just playing a little better football right now.  But this game is a tossup... MSU wins on a late FG.

Next Best 3

No. 14 Nebraska over No. 6 Missouri

Emotional Hangover.  And down come the goalposts at a Mizzou game for the second straight week.

No. 2 Oregon at USC

C'mon.  You really expect me to believe that a USC defense yielding 415.4 yards and 24.3 points per game is going to hold Oregon under 50?  Watch the Trojans quit on defense by the end of the third quarter.

North Carolina over No. 16 Florida State

I think Florida State jumps out to an early lead at halftime while NC State completes a furious comeback.  These two teams are very even but FSU just seems to be too inconsistent.  Maybe it's mental... so I expect the Seminoles to fumble in the final minute.  NC State holds on for the win.  Something like 28-24.

Great call on the Fla. St. game. Unusually good.

I have been using your best of 7 coin flip method on all NFL games this year. I found I was losing more than half the games when picking the best team.

BCS rankings never die..they just change.

Don't think it would be a good thing for the Big 10 to get into the title game with Mich St. I could be wrong. But getting two teams in the BCS would bring a lot of money, which solves about everything.

Your right about Illinois gaining much respect as the season goes on. Losses to only quality teams.

Good blog.

I would typically say "Great choice!" but that Illinois game has left a sour taste in my mouth

Michigan State over Iowa

Whoops.

Grue, huge style points for the electric football game table. I used to have one of those! Many hours of fun watching players wander aimlessly on the field, running into their own men and occasionally stumbling into the end zone--an excellent prelude to my years at Buffalo.

Watch the Trojans quit on defense by the end of the third quarter.

Spot on. They were gassed at that point and just wanted to jump in their Land Rovers and go home.

Told ya IU would choke

October 31, 2010  02:03 PM ET

Iowa.
