GM has said they will come back into Indy Car with possible teams Penske and Gannassi in 2012.

Now we are possibly seeing why Ganassi is sticking with Chev in NASCAR instead of running Ford. There is always more going on in the back round than we ever will know.

Some teams have more going on then just NASCAR or even Cup racing.

Indycar is Penske's first love and primary interest. I'm just surprised he wants to go with GM bodywork instead of making it himself. His shop is certainly capable.

November 12, 2010  08:47 PM ET

It NOT the Bodywork... Next year is the last year of the current 3.5 liter Honda V-8 that all the team use....So GM / Chevrolet is talking about supplying engines, when IRL goes to 4 or 6 cyl, 2 liter turbocharged engine formula for 2012.

When GM had the Buick's in Indy they were using another companies bodies.
I can not remember what the bodies were but was not designed by GM

Also on Gannassi Racing Web Site ;) http://www.chipganassiracing.com/ looks to be a done deal cause it shows a artist drawing of an IRL car, with Chevrolet logos. ...

General Motors and Chevrolet officials announced today ( Friday, Nov 12,) that Chevrolet will compete in the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series with a new twin-turbocharged, direct-injected V-6 racing engine powered by renewable E85 ethanol fuel.

The new Chevrolet IZOD IndyCar Series engine program will reunite one of the most successful partnerships in motorsports as Team Penske will introduce the Chevrolet engine in 2012. Team Penske previously tallied 31 Indy car victories with Chevrolet engines, including four Indianapolis 500 wins.

So maybe Penske to Chevrolet in NASCAR also,...well do not count on that, remember Penske has run different manufacturers at the same time in others series,... before.

Body by Fisher ;))

Speculation was Gnnassi would be the first year "primary team" and was why they didn't go with Toyota. Guess that didn't work...

My question is Penske with Chevy in Indycar but with Dodge in NASCAR? Strange bedfellows!

November 12, 2010  09:22 PM ET

Strange bedfellows is nothing new
Robby Gordon drives a Hummer in off road and Toys in Cup racing

November 12, 2010  09:35 PM ET

Wonder if Ford will follow suit just like the old days again.
What was it , Ford Cosworth?

For real :) back then,...say 1992, it was a chassis built by Lola mated to an Engine, be it Buick, Chevrolet, Ford, Cosworth

How about a Team Andetti Power by Ford ...driven by Mrs. Danica...then what a JR NW or CUP CHEV or ?? ...and by the way Ford sold it part of Cosworth, years ago!

Plus who knows IF Fiat-Chrysler/ Dodge is planning on staying in NASCAR .... maybe Roger know something we don't ....be great IF Roger could get Smoke to do INDY then in 2012...

Use to be a huge Micheal Andretti.
Never got to see him win at Indianapolis

November 13, 2010  09:40 AM ET

Guess the SPAM is OFF the cruise ship ;) ...

Another story on these line ;) Kyle Busch has had discussions with IndyCar driver Tony Kanaan about having the Brazilian run some NASCAR races for KB Truck team.

Tony K ran The Prelude to the Dream....and had a blast! first time on dirt.

Haven't really followed Indy Car since the time they split. I remember (vaguely) that one of the issues was the engines. The engines were supplied, but then they wanted them back at the end of the year. Foyt wouldn't stand for it, because he said that the manufacturer benefited from the work he did on the engine and then shared that with the other teams. Anyone else remember that?

November 13, 2010  01:24 PM ET

Burgh, depending on the time period, sometimes the teams had to buy the engines and other times they were leased. When they were leased, the mfg did all the rebuilds and updates. In this case, the engines were "sealed" so the teams couldn't touch them.

November 13, 2010  06:38 PM ET

And the other thing with the IRL engines,...ANY team(s) must be able to lease the engine, per IRL rules...so it could turn out that ALL the teams run the GM / Chevrolet engine .... or I guess a team could switch back & forth .... CHEV on Ovals .... Honda or VW at Road Races

When they lease the engines they are still allowed to "tinker" with them aren't they? Otherwise they would all have the same horsepower.

Penske taking his NASCAR program to Chevrolet is exactly what I first thought when reading about this.

Do you know if he drives the Humvee or the Hummer?

Hummer now gone, fortunately a lot of WW demand for Humvee and all employees as far as I know were able to transfer back to the Humvee production lines.

Didn't penske have a previous relationship at Indy with Chevy/Buick/Cadillac or however they branded it when due to a quirk in indy car rules, "pushrod" engines had a huge advantage?
