OK, The highest point spread ever in a regular season NFL game was 23 points Cincinatti playing at San Fran back in the 90's. San Fran was favored to win by 23 and didnt cover. They won 21-8.

This season, the Patriots have been giving double digit points to everyone but the Colts, Chargers, Dallas Cincy and the Jets. The 6.5 the Pats gave to the Jets was week one and noone really had any idea how just how really really bad the Jets are and conversely how really really good the Patriots are. The Chargers were getting 3.5 because lets face it, they had the revenge game and they were a viable playoff team last season. Still, giving 5 points to the defending Super Bowl Champs in their own house was unprecedented.

But then Las Vegas got really smart. Or angry. Or both. Regardless of whether they played at the Razor or on the road. The Patriots started getting double digit spreads. 16.5 to Buffalo. The next week was an error in judgement in Vegas and the Patriots gave 8.5 away. But that was a Monday night game, it was in Cincy and the Patriots well, lets just say Mondays arent typically their best day. Week 5 was a 16 point spread  against the Browns. Week 6 was yet another brain fart for Vegas and the Pats gave away 5.5 to the Cowboys. But hey, it was the battle of the unbeatens remember? The Original 81 vs the Other 81. Yet in spite of TO's urge to us to get our popcorn ready, it seems that 5.5 wasnt nearly enough out of Vegas. Then it was 16 points given to Miami - IN MIAMI ! Hey, I know they're bad but the Patriots don't have a great history beating the Dolphins in Miami. Then it was -15 vs the Redskins. Nope, that wasnt enough either. Then it was the -5.5 at Indy. Patriots won by 4 so it turns out the defending Super Bowl Champs DID need those 5 and a half points to beat the Patriots the only way anyone has all season - In the casino's.

As of right now, there are some insane point spreads for the remaining Patriot games. Want to guess what the advance gurus in Vegas are tentatively setting the future spread at when the Pats play the Steelers? Sorry Cass.. The Pats are GIVING them 10.5 points. Bills? 14 points. The Ravens? 17 points. The JETS ? Its at 21.5 right now and we all know that may go higher. The Giants, who in all likelihood will have a whole lot to play for are getting 11. Despite the huge disparity in records, Im wagering the sportsbook guys are thinking alot of the Patriots starters will be sitting this game out. Or at least part of it.

Now, remember, these are future lines and while there are some gamblers out there that Im sure will take one of these bets in advance. I surely am not one of them. Can you imagine taking the Ravens game only to find out that Matt Light, Tom Brady, Richard Seymour, Randy Moss, Vince Wilfork and Mike Vrabel are all at baby Brady's christening that day? No thanks, that line will drop in a heartbeat.

While it sure was fun looking all this up, I cant help but wonder? Who the hell takes these bets weeks before?

Crazy I tell ya.

Its just crazy.
