I don't comment much but I have visited this site regularly for the last 3 years. You all make me laugh, make me shake my head, some elicit anger and some elicit sadness. I love the humor, the razzing, the stupidity, the camaraderie. You people have filled gaps in my work day, evenings with nothing to do, and at times have given me an excuse to just escape when my family is getting on my nerves (smile).
I've seen a lot on this site over the last 3 years. When I first discovered FanNation - through Peter King's Picks - the Community section was very hard to find. The Truth and Rumor section was the only direct link from Sports Illustrated. You pretty much had to be a genius to find the Community link hidden on the far right side of the screen. But once I found it, I never looked back! I have a household where no one cares about the NFL, yet I'd found a website full of fun people who love football and taught me several things about other sports. Back then, you could find the most active blogs, TDs, T&Rs and see most recent comments - all on the home page! There were moderators who cared and user moderators who also cared but were honest and fair. The site was well run and when some users got a little crazy (Mario, Woodson, etc) they were batted around a bit by the regulars, but then deleted within an hour or so. Some of those crazy users were beloved even upon their return, because they were never hurtful or vulgar - just silly little comments and TDs to lighten the mood.
Things have changed since then. SI bought out the previous site administrators and FN became a big, glaring white background. They advertised TDs in their magazine and idiots from everywhere created multiple accounts to gain leaderboard status. It was the worst move ever made to a site with growing popularity. Trolls and just plain stalkers caravanned around the various sections of FN wreaking havoc everywhere. There was one Memorial Day weekend that was filled with horrible images - all weekend long. Several quality users were lost as a result (too many to name individually).
Eventually things settled and we find ourselves where we are today. The moderation leaves a lot to be desired. Things are still out of control in many ways. But there are still quite a few from the original FanNation incarnation, as well as many others who have been a welcome addition to the site. The Community still grows and I am thankful for those good users who continue to keep the site alive and fun.
So, I'd like to give Thanks to those who have made this site enjoyable. I won't name names because I'm going to miss people and piss them off. But I will say Thanks to the Truth and Rumor section - the driver of the Community, the characters who only stick to the topic on the first couple pages and the drama that ensues in the subsequent 5,430,056 pages. Thank you to the Message Board section - currently trying to find a happy medium and going through their own 'mass exodus' troll situation. Hang in there guys. But most of all, I'm thankful for the Throwdown section, where I have hung my hat for the last three years. I don't care what anyone says about these guys - a good lot of them know their sports, debating is fun and discussion is entertaining. And while I steer clear from actually participating in TDs these guys have always accepted me and for the most part have never labeled me as a know nothing female. You guys are awesome.
Happy Thanksgiving, FanNation. May every section of this site have a wonderful holiday. May the Moderators read this blog and finally do something to control the site. And may the **** find another site entirely.
