Wedneday night marked a day in history for me. For the first time in my life, my beloved high school basketball team lost the opener to nearby Union County. The excitement and energy of the nearly 5000 people on hand for a game between two schools whose town populations equal about 20,000 is a pretty big deal. 20% of the area attended the game to see the Spartans fall short. Indiana has always been a hot bed for high school basketball and no place is better than East Central Indiana. It broke my heart to see my beloved team lose in a near Hoosiers-like manner. It is what makes Indiana high school basketball great. The small town can beat the big super giant. The Spartan's are one of the winningest schools in the states histroy having won 57 sectional championships compared to Union County's 3. This brings me to my plea. How I wish the IHSAA would go back to a single class basketball system. Only in Indiana is the level of fairness for a school of 200 equal to that of a school of 2000. In basketball, it only takes to play basketball. It is things like this that make me bitter at the IHSAA. I simply wish they would change it back to the way its supposed to be.

The single class system is what made high school basketball great. Like when Blue River Valley and defending 3A champs New Castle went down to the wire in a regular season opener.
