As a sellout crowd of 54,251 entered the stadium, they were greeted with an unusual sight. The dirt infield was removed ??? replaced with 100 yards of collegiate gridiron. It was hard to imagine Yankee Stadium as the home of the 27 time World Champion Yankees. The dugouts were hidden and goal posts towered above the field.
The Fighting Irish wore their alternative green jerseys in honor of the late Knute Rockne and Frank Leahy, who used to coach the Fighting Irish and were legends during their respective careers. The green jerseys were once used to instill fear in the opposing team, according to Rockne and Leahy. Apparently that theory was proven true on Saturday when Notre Dame crushed the Black Nights, and Army was destroyed 27-3.
Key players for both Army and Notre Dame this past weekend include:
- Cierre Wood who had 95 rushing yards
- Robert Hughes who had 40 rushing yards
- Trent Steelman, who lead the team with 37 rushing yards
- Patrick Mealy who picked up 31 rushing yards
