Sports Six-Pack:

1) Puzzling decision for NCAA concerning Cam Newton...declared ineligible on November 30th and re-instated on December 1. What could be going on? Maybe...

a) The NCAA didn't want a repeat of the Reggie Bush fiasco. Cam should win the Heisman in a wash...and then to have 2 winners vacate the trophy in a 2 year period could be another black eye for college football.

b) The NCAA realized that an Auburn/Oregon BCS Championship game means $$$$$ vs. an Oregon/TCU game which means $.

c) The NCAA punishes Cam's dad, but not him...you couldn't make up that story in a million years.

What could the future hold?

Only time will tell.

2) Urban Meyer steps down as the Florida Gators coach. A year too late, but I think he's making the right decision for himself and his family. 103-23 (.817), 2 National Championships....what a great record for his career at Bowling Green/Utah/Florida! Let the future coaching predictions begin!!

3)  Sorry, but I don't have too much sympathy for Derek Jeter or the Yankees concerning the contract negotiations. Too bad he had to "settle" for only $17 million a year...poor guy!

4) Amazing when you think about where Tiger Woods was only 13 months ago compared where he is today...at this time in November 2009 the question wasn't just when he would break Jack Nicklaus's PGA Majors record, but how high he would run the total. Fast forward to December 2010; now the question is "will he ever win again?". His fall was almost as steep as Michael Vicks!

5) The Brett Favre watch: Will he play..can he play..if he does play, how will he do? Brad Childress pinned his hopes on #4...the question for Leslie Frasier might be: Will you be as loyal to #4 now that he has "decided" to retire...is Tavaris Jackson the QB of the future? Think this one carefully, your future is at stake.

6) R.I.P Dandy Don Meredith...you were an original!

1) Yes to all. I read a report that 6 of the Heisman voters had already decided not to vote for him

2) I wonder what's behind the scenes

3) Jeter got his feelings hurt because the negotiations were played out in the media. Where has he been the last 15 years? Almost all negotiations are!

4) You have to wonder now if he'll ever get it back.

5) I can't believe the NFL hasn't addressed the findings from his supposed texts.

6) Amen to that! Great man.

another good post.

#4. Now that Tiger is divorced there is absolutely no reason for him not to go back to his sex addiction. Might play better golf that way.

#5. If the only reason Brett is playing now that the Super Bowl is out of reach is to get 300 starts, I say let him take the first snap in the next 3 games then bench him and put Tavaris in. After all, T-Jack pulled the Vikes fat out of the fire before. As for Brett retiring, I'll believe it when he's been out of the NFL for 3 years.

I can't believe how damn good Cam Newton is. $180,000? His dad should have demanded half a mil.

Urban Meyer will be back.

Jeter made off like a bandit.

Tiger Woods Golf (EA Sports) down 75% from it's last version.

I don't bother listening to anything Favre says any longer. He's a pathological liar as far as I'm concerned.

R.I.P. Don Meredith.

Yeah, too bad Cecil became a minister rather than an accountant. He could have worked part-time when Cam went to college and retired when he went pro.....

I think that this time rather than vacate the trophy, should they take it away from Newton within the next 2 years, that they may award it instead to the runnerup this time. They didn't with Bush because it had been so many years. But with Newton - IF the investigation doesnt take forever - we might see the 2nd place finisher be the real winner.

I think the NCAA will sweep this under the carpet...they conducted a 30-second investigation and came down on Cecil.....!

Gotta agree with you Darth. It's a win-win for the NCAA.

Auburn / Oregon matchup = $$$$$$$$$$$

If for nothing more than the controversy swirling around Newton. All the pro-Newton camp will be rooting for Auburn and all the anti-Newton camp will be pushing for Oregon. What were they facing otherwise? Auburn's HUGE national fan base? Pfffft. Ditto for Oregon. This.... was fuel for the fire baby.

And in a smart move, the NCAA left the window open for an investigation. I.E. - After we made a ton of $$$ with a good Nat'l Champ match-up, we can turn around, have our investigation, find Newton did break the rules, and still look like the good guys because....
1) We followed the letter of our bylaws by NOT finding him ineligible without sufficient evidence
BUT
2) When we DID "find" sufficient evidence, we turned around and "did the right thing" and punished him.

In the meantime, Auburn made fat $$$. Oregon made fat $$$. The NCAA makes fat $$$.
Newton keeps his fat $$$, gets to be a first round pick (would YOU be dumb enough to stick around Auburn after this?), makes more fat $$$ and then laughs later as they take away his Heisman. Or pulls a Reggie Bush and gives it back, taking the 'honorable' exit.

Yeah. I know. Vast conspiracy. Whatever. It doesn't even have to be a conspiracy. Just requires the NCAA to look the other way temporarily. They know that.

As for Meyer bailing...... he's tied to this. That and his record at Florida is slipping. He has high expectations on him after delivering two championships. He's getting while the getting's good, a la Pete Carroll-style.
