The Eagles are the best in the league right now, with the Pats right behind. The difference is that the Patriots have a clean cut superstar in Tom Brady, & the Eagles have dog killer Michael Vick. How will the league & the fans react if his team not only makes it to the big game, but wins it?
Has he learned his lesson? I don't know. Lots of people get caught & say all the right things, but eventually the old ways come back. Kobe Bryant had a rape charge, but has been a model citizen since. Big Ben was involved in a similar circumstance, but that was recent. Let's see what happens down the line.
The fact is, we treat athletes differently than normal people. You could say that some fans would root for Hitler if he could win you games. Bay area Giants fans complained how Barry Bonds was treated in the media. Yeah, he cheated, but his cheating meant home runs. Fans boo if their team gets called for a penalty even if it's blatant.
The 49ers, supposedly a class organization, once signed ex Nebraska tailback Lawrence Phillips. This was a thug who beat up his girlfriend & dragged her down 3 flights of stairs. But Bill Walsh thought he might help the team. All that happened was that Phillips lazily missed a block that ended Steve Young's career. Phillips was soon gone, & was never heard from again.
Obviously the difference here is that Vick is playing well. If he wasn't, he would be gone, like Phillips. The message is clear. Maybe you believe in 2nd chances, but I wonder if that should happen in a business where the workers are treated like heroes that children look up to?
