I watched the news tonight. Big mistake. Watching the news always makes me grumpy. (Who'd have guessed that watching stories about car wrecks, murders, and homeless vets would have that effect on a person?)
Anyway, I know exactly who I want to take my anger out on:
- I can't stand college football teams that dance on the opposition's logo. You won. Good for you. Now go celebrate with your fans, your friends, and your family. But for heaven's sake, stay off their logo. If a fight breaks out, I'm not going to blame the guy who just had insult added to injury. Oh! And teams that retaliate by dancing on the opposition's logo one year later? That's real classy. I mean, you know how it feels to have your beloved symbol stomped on, and you do it anyway?
- You lose your right to complain about officiating at any level if you've ever yelled at the referees working at the second grade level. There are plenty of good people who leave the business because they are so frustrated with the thoughtlessness and heartlessness of the fans they see when they are learning the craft. Who do we get in the place of these hard-working, dedicated individuals? Tim Donaghy.
- Speaking of officiating, college coaches need to stop whining about the NCAA's promised crackdown on coaches who yell and scream and use vulgarities. You don't think middle school coaches try to emulate you? And don't give me you need to humiliate your kids to motivate them. Jim Calhoun and Coach K are really smart men. They can find another way to motivate. But a 13-year-old may never recover their love of sport once their coach imitates Bob Knight in an attempt to win the Youth League Division B County Championship and the 5" inch trophy that comes with it.
- Patriots fans, I am almost starting to sympathize with you. Some of the arguments about how much "Spygate" should taint the team's legacy are really over the top. It's sort of silly to suggest the Pats should surrender their past Super Bowl titles as a result of "Spygate." Now surrendering the moral high ground? That's another story.
- Finally, enough with the Mark Mangino is kind of a big guy and Joe Paterno is no spring chicken jokes. Sure the Writer's Guild is out on strike, but find some new material. Please. I have to admit, though, I'd really love one of those "I break for Joe Pa" bumper stickers. We all know what happens when you don't break for Joe Pa.
