First and foremost, let me honor the creators of the original Fannation Dogs, Pigs and Sheep group. Some of the greatest Fannation friends I ever had - Coletrain, Cardsox, Mac, chrono8008, Marada, Lifer, Nomarfan, Wallace, and yes, even eaglemaniac (although he drove me nuts). Those were the glory days of Fannation and we can never, ever recapture them. I joined Fannation originally in April 2007, when it was first linked to the Sports Illustrated website through the Truth & rumors section. (That profile unfortunately had to be blown up - long story)
Back in those days, I first realized that Fannation was a meeting place for people who liked sports, but also was a place where I could find folks who thought like I did. I loved sports ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. Later, when I got older, music entered my life and completely took over. High School was a rough time, my music was more important than participating in sports, so I was relegated to the "Hoods' subgroup of high school clique life, and sadly watched all my "jock" friends turn their backs on me. Sports was forced to take a back seat as I concentrated on my love of music. Only later, after joining Fannation, did I realize that there were others just like me. Others who were sports fans and music fans, and felt maybe just a little out of place talking about these things with their friends. Only in Fannation did we discover that we are not alone.
Back in the days of Yore! Back before the evil corporate villains who control SI and Time Warner overtook our little Fannation creator friends. This actually used to be a much different site. Looked a lot different too. Worked a lot different. The Community Page used to mean something. It used to be where everyone went. I know it isn't anymore, but there was once a time when blogging on this site was kind of cool.
So this is my resurrection of one group on Fannation that meant a lot to me. I hope you enjoy it, maybe I think it will go over like a lead balloon. Maybe it just offends your sense of what should be on this website and what should not. But if you agree, and you want to participate, join the group. Folks who want to blog and share their ideas are welcome. We can never live up to the original group - those minds have moved on and left us. But we can at least keep them alive in spirit, and of course, ROCK ON. (The fact that now we can actually embed videos instead of just providing links is an extra bonus!) [Links are still provided for those of you where videos are blocked]
The Eagles - Hotel California
A few nights ago, I had to do a long drive. Flipping the stations soon I found a song that sounded good to me, and this is what it was. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant made music that today, over 40 years later, still hits harder than 90% of what the new kids can do. When I was 15, my dad took me to a bookstore and told me to pick out a book I wanted. I ended up buying "The Hammer of The Gods" and it inspired me like no book ever has before or since. I don't care if most of the stuff in the book was true or not - I just fell in love with the music. And even today, 25 years (+ or - ) since then, I still am intoxicated by their sounds.
Led Zeppelin - Over The Hills and Far Away
One memory that stand out in my mind from the original group is this one. Mac would occasionally write about just music he found on Youtube. Once a wrote a little paragraph about a group Machine Head - sort of an experimental industrial grunge/metal thrash band. It just so happened that I saw one of Machine Head's first gigs, when I lived in the Bay Area. I was drunk as hell that night, but their power was overwhelming. All I knew about them was that the guitarist used to be in Vio-lence, a group we used to be make fun of in the Bay Area (Vio-lence was just a bad name). I turned Mac on to the following song. This is Oakland Metal. That was what I said to him. You see, Dogs Pigs and Sheep was not just about Classic Rock...
Maybe you are a newer user, and arrived in Fannation after those glory days. No worries, you are quite welcome to join too. Here is the link to the original group, if you would like to peruse what I mean when I say, "The spirit of the Original" http://www.fannation.com/groups/show/6364 So like I was saying, all musical opinions that like the word rock are welcome. It's about rock and roll folks, and Dogs Pigs and Sheep would review everything from classic rock to the newest Metallica. I miss it. And I want it back. It's late and I have to go to bed. I wanted to do something from Metallica, but their damn videos are blocked from WMG from playing. So here's some Anthrax. And somewhat sports related. Let's just listen....
