I have watched Kobe his whole career.. He has a LOT of similarities to his "airness".. There's this lil discussion that if Kobe gets 6 titles he's right up on Jordan's heels, or even has conquered the KING of basketball, given that Bryant is probably going to statistically edge out Jordan in a lot of BIG categories when all is said n done.. I disagree with this notion. For Kobe to surpass Jordan in my eyes he needs 8 titles.. Yes, i said 8 titles! .. For one.. Kobe has maintained the thrown of being the best player in the nba since Jordan's retirement from the Wiz.. Kobe is a GREAT basketball player..I mean, it's dumb of me to even put that out there.. Tied w/ Magic .. 5 Titles.. lmao..WE ALL KNOW how great the black mamba IS.. My argument in regards to Jordan is that Jordan WAS the man for all 6 finals.. Given he had some GREAT teams and arguably the best hinchmen in Scottie Pippen.. Jordan won 6 Final MVp's.. HOw many does Kobe have you ask? lol 2 Final mvp's. I also note that Pippen was a GREAT sidekick..no questions about it.. but for 3 of Kobe's 5 titles he had the MOST DOMINATING FORCE IN NBA history!(Shaq,5th all time in points) Also, i play into factor that Jordan played in the league when it was a lil more intense.. I hate to be biased to the 90's but that's how i feel. The league is the League these days.. With all these superteams" going on.. i think the league is on the way back to the big time teams, games, and memories that the 90's brought to the table.. Kobe like Jordan has stopped a couple great players from recieving titles.. One being Allen Iverson.. the other being Reggie"redhot" Miller. Jordan has a longer list where this keeping titles away is concerned... He's stopped Ewing, Barkley, R. Miller, and the GREAT duo of Malone n Stockton. Kobe is embarking on his 2nd 3 peat with the lakers.. something Jordan did as well as a Bull. Kobe has been to 7 Finals.. that is more than Jordan has been to .. the big deal about that is that Jordan NEVER LOST in the Finals.. I think it's absurd to think think that Kobe is real close to passing MJ.. I don't think everybody thinks that but i think enough do for me to make this blog.. Kobe like i stated earlier needs 8 nba titles to conquer the KING.. seriously.. at that point in time Kobe would have 10 nba final appearances.. It's a tall order to knock MJ.. MOST of Kobe's stats are going to pass Michael's.. a lot he's already passed.. i think if Kobe gets 8 titles and surpasses Jordan on the all time points list which shouldn't be hard for him.. I don't even know what the numbers are but i know right now Kobe is 7th all time and Jordan is 3rd.. i think Kobe is getting older and the west in the next few years will be conquered by the Oklahoma City Thunder.. my personal opinion.. Kobe will be lucky to get 7, unless they pull magic.. get the next generations supaman.. Dwight Howard  .. My personal opinion is that Kobe ends up with 6 titles and beats Jordan in about all the statistical categories. YOu have to think too that Kobe got an early start on Jordan.. Jordan didn't come str8 outta highschool.. Jordan also retired to swing the bat a lil .. Kobe has been going str8 the whole time.. so that statistical beatdown doesn't mean much.. Sorry Kobe fans.. he won't surpass MJ but he'll be close.. there is no doubt about it.. One thing i do know.. Phil loves these two guys.. They've made him into the greatest nba coach of all-time.. Kobe will, if not already, be a top 5 player all time.. I'm signing out now.. MJ>MAMBA for now and forever The only instance 24 is not greater than 23.

p.s. Luc Longley and Shaquille O' Neal are from two diff. worlds lmao

Peach - What's the verdict? Would Hakeem Olajuwon have even one title if Jordan hadn't taken a baseball break?

My apologies, Peachio! You always give respect to the legends and hall of famers.

Even Rudedog (and DJ!) can't be too upset. You're giving Kobe a ton of respect to even compare him head to head to MJ like that.

Kobe's sumtn serious.. that's for sure

Rudedog agrees. Unless Kobe drops 30 a game the next 4 seasons and he wins a title every year, he won't ever be better than MJ

There are a few points I want to make, because the arguments against Kobe in my opinion are always kind of slighted...

1. The Lakers always faced the toughest and best teams in the Western Conference playoff games, where Kobe on many occasions was mot only the MVP, but also the savior for his team. Beating the Spurs, and Portland, and the Kings were all with Kobe dominating on the offensive AND defensive end. But because no one remembers those games and there is no trophy given out for that, it gets overlooked

2. The Lakers faced 3 teams in the Finals with a NOBODY for a center....Rik Smits, Todd Macculloch, and Dikembe Mutumbo!! Why wouldn't you pound it in to Shaq and why wouldn't he win Finals MVP each year? Kobe and the Lakers obviously were playing to win and that meant a game plan that favored their inside game. Not so say Shaq isn't great, but if the strategy was to get Kobe off and still win, then he might have won 3 Finals MVPs.

3. Kobe couldn't help playing with another star player....but for him to still become a star with and after him is a great accomplishment in it's own right! So holding it against him as if it was a controllable circumstance is crazy. Just like MJ was dominant to Pippen, but Pippen knew he had to take a backseat to the better player and focal point of their team. But without him, MJ would NOT have won as many titles. But those circumstances aren't held against Jordan like they are against Kobe, because Kobe is being compared to MJ. It's the easiest way to discredit Kobe.

So with that said, if you consider those 3 things and just look at their overall impact and value to their teams and the game....I say that Kobe is very much comparable to MJ! I can accept stats and intangibles and wins....but things like "Finals MVPs" or "Kobe was second fiddle to Shaq" is stupid and doesn't take away from how great Kobe is as a player.
