If you're in line at the MGM Grand taxi stand this afternoon and a street legal #14 Mobil 1 Chevrolet stock car pulls up as your ride to McCarran, don't be alarmed, as it's likely NASCAR champion Tony Stewart behind the wheel. This morning, the two-time NASCAR champion is at Lucky Cab learning the ropes before his special taxi goes out hunting for fares -- and surprised NASCAR fans.
Tony trades his race-day suit to suit up as a Las Vegas cabbie for the day and plans to pick up passengers from MGM Grand. I'm told that illusionist David Copperfield will take the ceremonial first ride this afternoon after flagging down the cab. Then models will be lined up to help passengers in and out of the taxi. It's all to promote Sunday's big 400 Sprint Cup Kobalt Tools race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Seems like a fun idea to me.
