I love Metallica!

I got into Metallica in the 80's with Lightning, and so I'm always going to remain closest to the Cliff Burton era. I for one did hear a noticeable change once he was gone - aside from the fact that Justice they lowered Newstead's bass so low in the mix you can't even hear it. When the Black album came out, it was not an instant hit for me, but hindsight 20/20 I understand now it was a direction they almost had to go in for survival. At the time, there were so many imitators of their original sound, they had to evolve to something else or become extinct.

I can't say that I'm as big of a fan of their stuff since then. I can enjoy it, but I'm not as fanatical about it as I am with Lightning and Puppets. That's not to say they aren't one of, if not my very favorite band of all time.

Metallica are simply stated the Led Zeppelin of my generation.

^The album version in nice and all, but it doesn't seem complete to me without the "Die" Chorus when they it live ^

I am a huge Metallica fan! I love the early stuff for its energy and power, and the later stuff because it is so damn good *musically*. Hard to describe what I want to say. They evolved as musicians, as artists, and the music rocks! When I grab a disc I haven't listened to in awhile, it ends up staying in my cd player for a week! Love love love Death Magnetic, I cannot turn it up loud enough. I want to crawl inside of it.

It all sounds the same.

I like their early raw stuff. But I'm glad they progressed from thrash (unlike Pantera, Slayer, and Megadeth).

"One" on "And Justice For All" is their best song, best video (creepy as hell), and best guitar solo.

And yeah, they definitely changed their sound for the black album. Instead of 10 minute songs with multiple hooks and sections, he chopped it up and built songs around single hooks and lines like he did producing AC DC, Aerosmith, and Motley Crue.
(ie. "Enter Sandman" - the song that pissed off a lot of Metallica old-schoolers - but also the song that truly took Metallica mainstream).

"Master of Puppets" is one of the best albums I've heard from any band. "Disposable Heroes" is probably my favorite Metallica song.

Love Metallica! That being said, 'Justice' is my favorite album. I first heard them in '88 or '89 shortly after 'One' came out and they finally received some air play. I was 13 and thought it was the best thing I'd heard since Def Leppard, Poison, Cinderella, etc. (I still love my 80's hair bands). Metallica turned me on to metal--now I'm a fan of all kinds of metal: Slayer, Megadeth, Obituary, Sepultura, Danzig, Exodus, Venom, Six Feet Under, Marilyn Manson--the list goes on from nu metal to death metal to New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Really, I'm a fan of almost all music (yes, even rap and country--well 70's and 80's country, anyway; most of the new stuff bores me).

So, back to Metallica--I love their first 5 albums (Kill, Ride, Master, Justice, and Black). Load and Re-Load weren't my favorites, but I do love a few songs (The Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, etc.). Of course Garage, Inc. was cool, as it included the original Garage Days $5.98 EP, and a bunch of new stuff like the live-on-the-radio verson of Tuesday's Gone (with original Skynrd member, Gary Rosington, Primus' Les Claypool, Blues Traveler's John Popper, COC's Pepper Keenan, etc.) and several other covers. S&M, likewise, is not one of my favorites, but was a hell of a show (yes, I was one of the 5,000 people who got to see them--I was at the first of two nights). I can't say that I like St. Anger at all--just bored me too much. The same is true, for the most part, of Death Magnetic even though it's definitely more dynamic than Anger. I know people compare it to Justice, but it's just not as good to me (even with bass--lol). It's not horrible, I just never took much of a liking to most of it. Whew. All in all, I've seen them live 9 times, I believe: I was at both Days on the Green in Oakland ('91 with Faith No More, Ice T's Body Count, Queensryche, and Soundgarden, and in '92 with G 'N' R, and Faith No More again). I saw them again on one of the Black Album dates in Sacramento in '92; in '94 in Sacramento with Alice in Chains; in '96 in Sacramento; in '98 in Sacramento; in '99 with the SF Symphony; and, in '08 in Oakland in support of Death Magnetic. Either being at home with their families (even Lars' dad was there) or James being sober had mellowed them a bit, which disappointed me a bit, but it was still a damn good show. Better than most bands--and I've seen a lot. You can bet that when the Original Bay Area Thrashers Tour (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax) comes to NorCal, I'll be there. Metallica is one of my favorite bands of all time--and to me, the fact that they try new things is part of what makes them so great. That and their passion, skill, and the fact that when you go to a show, you can expect that the songs will sound every bit as good as the recorded versions--even better in cases like Seek and Destroy and Creeping Death with audience participation. Argument won, my friend--your cousin is a fairweather fan who doesn't appreciate musicians for what they are artists. Metallica didn't sell out; they made what they wanted and people liked it!

"Master of Puppets" is one of the greatest thrash/heavy metal (whatever you call it) albums of all-time. Guitar riffs and solo's are second to none. Anybody who says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about. Yes...I didn't like a lot of their 90's stuff. But, I have to say I liked their last realeast of "Death Magnetic" which was a blend of their 80's & 90's stuff. A least they brought the guitar solo's back and got rid of the Nirvana no-guitar-solo's rule.

My old roommate and I had what we called "the great debate"; which album is better between Master of Puppets and ...and Justice for All. I was always more of a M.o.P guy myself, but it was always a worthy discussion.

But there's no bass on Justice!!!!! None - I dare you to find a bass lick on that entire album. Can't be done. It's not there.
