For the last few years, there has been off and on debate as far as names of college teams. Teams such as the North Dakota Fighting Sioux, and other schools with Indians in their names have come under fire. Now, an argument can be made that they are honoring the tradition of certain tribes and so forth.
Holy Cross can't do that. They named their sports teams after one of the worst items of medieval history, The Crusades.
A little history on the Crusades.
In 1095, Pope Urban II got a letter from his Byzantine counterpart in Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos that he needed help from the Muslim Turks that were invading his area and threatening Constantinople, now called Istanbul.
Upon receipt of this, Urban II put together some firery speeches with outright lies in them in order to fire people up enough to sell off their goods and to head to Jerusalem to wrest control from the Muslims and put the city back into Christian hands. For the next few years, this Crusader army would march through Eastern Europe and kill those they felt were infadels, and that, at first, was the Jews. Thousands of Jews were murdered by these Crusaders, and it would not be the first massacre with the Crusades.
After reaching Constantinople and making an alliance with the Byzantines, they then marched into "enemy lands". When they reached Antioch in 1098, they laid siege to the city and after taking the city, arbitrarly killed all those within the city walls. This was Christians, Jews, and Muslim. There was no one spared this massacre.
After this incident, it would only get worse.
The next city to fall was Ma'arrat al-Numan. What made this different, was that after the siege and arbitrary killings within the city after it was captured, the Crusader army spent quite a bit of time within the city walls. Once they ran out of food, they turned to cannaibalism.
Finally, the city of Jerusalem would fall within the same pattern of siege, capture, then massacre of the cities inhabitants in 1099.
Over 100,000 people were killed in the massacres invoked by the Crusader army.
The cities fell about 100 years later back to the Muslims, who then did the same atrocious acts. Both sides were equally guilty in massacring innocent civilians of all faiths. There were several other Crusades to follow.
Is this really something to name a college team after? Before anyone gets on about Holy Cross being a Catholic school, Boston College, Notre Dame and several others are as well, but they do not invoke this ugly time in the history of the world.
Holy Cross, it's your turn to do what's right.
