Oh the NFL combine, a place where unknowns run unbelievably fast and jump higher than your favorite superhero. It amazes me how much stock millonaire owners put into a couple of days in Indianapolis where no football pads are even put on. The scouts and agents flirt like teenagers, and highly touted players choose to skip certain drills like throwing. That's probably not something anyone wants to watch a quarterback prospect do anyways, right? Thanks to media outlets such as ESPN who televise and report on the combine, it has become way more than it really deserves credit for. Determining how good of a football player you may draft based on random speed and agility drills is ridiculous. My son is a great shot with a bb gun at tin cans in the back yard. That doesn't qualify him to be a sniper for the local police squad does it? Pro Days are just as trivial as the combine. Let me get this straigt, you are going to play catch with your own recievers with no pressure in your face. Wow that sounds hard. Sorry for the sarcasm, but really folks determining a players worth can be found in the film room. Did the player lead his team in tackles or sacks? Was the player a team leader and help win a conference title? Could he shred a quality defense with pinpoint passing? Did he run through defensive lines and continue to reak havok on secondaries? All of this can be seen in past performances. Watching the games is the best way you can determine the quality of an athlete. The proof is in the pudding. What you see is what you get. Based on watching Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton, I would take Newton everytime. Sure they both have amazing physical attributes, but one of them lead his team to a national title while going undefeated in the toughest college football conference in america. So owners and GMs save yourself a trip to Indy next year and simply watch some good old college football.

Part of the reason the combine is important is not just the numbers. Its seeing up close in action. And also talking with a guy. There are medical evaluations too. The significance of pro days are to see some of those guys who were not invited to the combine.
But you tell the truth. If a guy runs a 4.3 at the combine but only had 2 touchdowns in 56 games in college, something is wrong. It is a puzzle that you piece together. If you have good scouting and you know your stuff, you will draft the right guy.
