As of this writing Missouri and West Virginia are #1 & #2 in the BCS rankings. If Missouri does not beat Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship this Saturday then Ohio State moves into the #2 spot and if both Missouri and West Virginia fall, then #4 Georgia gets to play for the national championship.
The similarities for Ohion State and Georgia? They don't play anyone this week so they can't lose! This gives them a better chance to play for the national championship since they don't have to play in their own conference championship games.
This underlies my belief that there has to be a rule that in order to play for and win the national championship, you HAVE TO WIN YOUR CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST! Sorry Notre Dame. Sorry independents. Join a conference, win it and then play for a title. I don't understand that a team that isn't deemed the best in its own conference can be named the best in the country.
Also, EVERY CONFERENCE SHOULD HAVE A CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME! You want a playoff system? This is it! It lowers the bar for the underdog team to play in a conference championship game and gives these games more of a playoff feel without having a playoff.
The system that the BCS has created benefits teams that don't have to play in big games late in the season. Missouri (if they should lose) should not be replaced by a team that did not have to win to get in like they have to. I would rather see Oklahoma, LSU (assuming they win the SEC Championship game) or another conference winner play than any team that earned their way in by watching another fall.
