It seems to me that after this weekend's draft and the Randy Moss trade, every man woman and child in the sports world is ready to coronate the New England Patriots 2008 Super Bowl Champions. To quote the great Lee Corso, "Not so fast my friend." The Patriots have certainly improved over the post season, but this not-so-humble observer is unwilling to concede the season just yet. The addition of Moss, Stallworth, and Welker, represents a tremendous improvement at wide receiver. It could potentially be the five hundred pound log that breaks the camels back, but upon closer inspection of last year's numbers, none of these "key additions" broke the NFL top 30 in receiving yards or in receiving touchdowns. In fact Moss had only 553 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Stallworth amassed a terrifying 725 yards with 5 TDs. "Randy Moss was unhappy," you may say, "Stallworth was hurt most of the season," you may explain. Well the truth is, Moss is always unhappy and Stallworth is always hurt. Welker will contribute on special teams, but as a receiver, he does not represent the improvement that will put these Patriots over the ledge and back to Super Bowl bliss. The AFC is tough, and if that's not an understatement, it will do until a better one comes along. With perennial threats like the Indianapolis Colts, the San Diego Chargers, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Denver Broncos to contend with, I think maybe we should let them play the season before we set a date for the parade. The addition of Adalius Thomas, Randy Moss and the gang makes for terrific off-season fodder, but remember folks; it's called the off-season because they still haven't played any games.
