There is no need for the Yanks to overpay (with prospects) for Santana due to the fact that Dan Haren, Joe Blanton and Dontrelle Willis are out there for the taking.

Yanks need a top of the rotation stopper which is Santana. None of the aforementioned 3 are that guy. But what is also means is:

  • Why would the Red Sox give their best prospects when they have a stopper in Beckett?
  • Why would the Angels ship off their best prospects for Santana when they need them to trade for a bat?
  • The Mets need more than 1 pitcher so they add one of the other 3 and keep Humber & Pelfrey and hope one of them pans out - plus dream that Pedro is healthy for the post season
  • And the Dodgers didn't even make the playoffs so why strip their team of young prospects for a game 1 of a series guy?
I stand firm on Melky & Kennedy or Hughes for Santana. We will miss you Melk-man

First of all, if the Red Sox take Santana, then it'll make the problems for the Yankees much, much bigger. Think of an ALCS where you have to face Santana and Beckett twice each. You are not going to win that.

Also--the trade isn't for a year, since whoever trades for Santana will understandable have a 72-hour window to negotiate an extension with him--money is no object for the Sox or the Yankees (or the Mets), and signing him for the next 6 years is a bonus to having him for 2008.

Ian Kennedy and Cabrera for Santana? Dream on.

The lowest I'd take, if I were the Twins, is Hughes, Cabrera, and Austin Jackson. Just tell that to the Yanks and say, okay, I'll go to the Red Sox and get a better offer.

The Yanks, if they get him, will overpay for him. And they won't care at all.

I wouldn't trade for Santana as it would cost too much young talent. I don't want Willis, who is the most overrated pitcher in baseball. Haren and Blanton would also cost alot(not as much as Santana, but still). Remember, these are the A's were talking about.
