I have been sitting here thinking about how to begin this new blog I have just created. What will be talked about? Well I hope we can freely talk about our frustration(and sometimes gratification) we feel when watching our Philly sports teams. I hope there will be disagreements or arguments. Agreeing with each other does not make for interesting blogging. Most of all, I, a Philly sports phanatic, need a place where I can vent when my teams are playing like garbage, and a place to write about their successes as well. This particular blog segment will contain a little bit of the latter, but most of it will teeter toward the garbage side of things. I'll start a conversation about the Philadelphia Eagles, and I hope to hear from the rest of the Philly Phaithful about the situation.
I will start off with the team which is most on my mind at this juncture of the year, the Philadelphia Eagles. If you were to tell me at the beginning of the season that we would be 5-6 at this point, I would say you were crazy. I would have also been dead wrong. This team has disappointed me in so many ways this year. I will say that I believe the biggest problems facing the Eagles are not ones that most fans would agree with. When you ask most fans they would say "It's Donovan McNabb." I strongly disagree, and I will tell you why. I believe Donovan is having an off year. If you look at Brett Favre and where he is now compared to a year ago, it's like comparing night to day. I believe quarterbacks go through off years. I also believe Donovan is still improving health wise since the knee injury. Remember, players are not supposed to even step on the field until a full year or so after the injury. Now, that being said, I believe the cause of the Eagles struggles this year have to do with Andy Reid. He has done a terrible job coaching this year(except for the NE game). His play calling has been absolutely horrendous. The most recent example of this was witnessed on Sunday night when Brian Westbrook carried the ball for five yards on first down with the team trailing by three at about NE's thirty, then on the very next play instead of running Westbrook again, he decides to call a pass play which ended our hopes of winning the game. Every knowledgable football fan knows that Andy is relaying his calls through Marty, and saying it's Marty's job to call plays. Where has the aggressive play calling been all year? Absent, not there.
Another reason why Andy Reid is the cause of the Eagles troubles is that he will not change his philosophy when it comes to run/pass ratio. The Eagles are most successful when running the ball about 45 percent of the time. He has the best weapon in the league in Westbrook, and he is not being used correctly. How much more potent would the offense be if Westbrook got the ball more, and Donovan was able to use that with play action and throw more balls downfield and be successful.? It's time for the coach to go, not the quarterback.
