The Chicago Bears Recap through week 12

Chicago Bears Upto Week 12

The Bears have played terrible and dissapointing this season and there are many factors to why they've been playing like this, from terrible players to injuries to terrible play calling we've hit them all. But even with all the factors working against the Bears they're still 5-6 and have a slim chance of playoffs with a conference record of 2-5 they have to win at least 4 of there final 5 games. Of the remaining 5 game all 5 teams have a equal or better record than the Bears. In the weak NFC I can see them having a slim chance and 3 of the 5 team left to play are tied with the Bears for the final wildcard spot in the NFC. Here are my offensive position breakdown reports:

QB- I was going to put them with the backs but thats a whole nother story. As most of know Rex was bench the after the third game with turning the ball over 7 times and only throwing one touchdown. Then they went to Griese and had four decent games but was doing worst then Grossman with 15 turnovers to 9 touchdown but in week 10 Griese left the game with a injured shoulder and Grossman came in and guess what....Rex fumbles snap first play but later that game Rex led a come back and won the game. Since then Rex hasn't been that good but has done a better job then Griese so hey if it's not broke don't fix it. Offseason- If I was the Bears I would find a way to sign Grossman to a cheap contract since they have so many other problems beside QB. Also I would pick up either Andre Woodson but if he doesn't fall that far, I'd settle with Matt Ryan because you know at least he won't give the game away and make costly mistakes.

RB- Most know that Benson got injured this week and is out for the season but not much will be lost because with Benson in the backfield you have nothing because he can't run, block or catch, but he has had the worst offensive line this year but he was the 4th overall pick in 2005 so he should be able to make do with a bad line. I still wouldn't give up on Benson because the last two games before he got injured he had 3 or runs of over 20 yrds and really looked like he was getting into a groove. Lastly  Adrian Peterson is Benson's backup and I love the way he plays. He plays at 120% when he is in and is a great pass blocker for a running back. Peterson was a 6th round pick about 6 years ago but he really does a good job of running the ball and in college he had about 9 to 10 thousand rushing yards at Southern Georgia so he know how to get it done. Offseason- I think the Bears should make a serious push for Michael Turner SD he is cheaper, faster, and can wear a team down and he is a 5th round pick and Benson was 4th overall. I think Turner really would come here because he already has a house in Chicago, he went to college and high school in Illinois and he would love to be a starting tailback instead of sit the bench behind LT.

Offensive Line- This is the number one reason we hae been terrible this year. Benson and Grossman/Griese never has holes to run through or time to pass because there only holding there guys for 3-4 seconds and with a guy like Grossman he needs about 9-10 seconds the way he runs plays. There is one player on the line that is embarrassing himself and that guy is 34 year old Fred Miller. Miller gave up three consecutive sacks to Patrick Kerney and the week before he got tooken off his feet by a defensive end for the Raiders. Beside Miller being pitaful the rest of the O-line has beens the same even Kreutz hasn't been playing good. The Bears have the oldest line in the league and have no one that can play any better on the bench. Offseason: I believe the only way to fix this line is by drafting lineman because offensive lineman through free agentcy usually turn out to be buss.....but hey we do have Bustson. They need two draft 3-4 O-line this year.

WR's- This recieving corp. could be the best in the league if they didn't drop so many balls and could get separation from the cornerback. This year Berrian has been terrible with dropped pass but he hasn't really got open and when he does get open Griese doesn't have a big enough arm to get him the ball. Moose has played really well and I love how good he runs route and the strengh he shows after the catch but again he doesn't get open enough but alot of that has to do with the play calling. Lastly they have to get Hester in on a regular even down players because going to him  immediately when he get in isn't going to work and these one play in and out things are not committing to him, he needs the ball more regularly. Offseason- I don't think they have to do anything with the reciever except sign Berrian to a contract.

I'll do defense and coaching later because I'm tired of talking about how sorry the Bears have played this year and my hands are pretty tired. Please comment and tell me what you think and how the Bears can get better. Thanks for reading my blog hope you enjoy.

pssst... I picked them on my card this week to win :-)

To everyone that got a fanmail with no link sorry about that it accidentally posted twice so I had to delete it but deleted the wrong one.

I'm a die-hard Bears fan but I couldn't pick them how inconsistent they've been just barely beating a Broncos team that had been struggling the same way we have.

I like the idea about bringing in Michael "The Burner" Turner. Did you know he and Garrett Wolfe share the same alma mater? I watched turner tear it up in college as a proud member of the NIU Marching band. Even though I am a Buckeye fan, I loved Wolfe running for over 200 yds against OSU. Bringing in Turner, and hopefully seeing what Garret can do at this level, should prove to make teams respect the run.

Someone has been reading my blogs... :P

I really like the blog, but I don't think the Bears need to draft 3 or 4 O-linemen. They can pick up a LT in the draft and move Tait back to RT where he belongs. I heard G/C Josh Beekman is supposed to be a good prospect, so the Bears can bring him along while we wait for Ruben Brown (who will be healthy next season) to retire.

And saying the Bears WR corps could be the best in the league without all the drops is like saying Cedric Benson would be a good running back if he ran for more yards. I have to disagree. Moose is past his prime, Berrian took a step back this year instead of a step forward, Bradley is a bust, Davis has been invisible, Hass is too slow, Hester is too... Um... Not smart.

Oh yeah, it would be *so* *awesome* to have two NIU backs in the Bears' backfield! Cool beyond words. :)

Well if you think about the versatilely for the Bears receivers you can see where one of the best receiving corps would come from. Look you have Moose has the big power receivers with good routes, Berrian can hit comeback routes and beat cornerbacks downfield with his speed, Davis has really good hands and doesn't mind going across the middle, Olsen and Clark can cause many mismatches, and Bradley has potential but keeps being slowed by injury, and lastly Hester can make huge plays but the play calling has been terrible, you can't just run WR reverses and quick slant pass to him. He needs to get some nice crossing routes or slot screens. Also if you think about it, alot of 15 to 20 pass have been dropped with no one on them and there just not getting the separation from the receivers like they need to and have tons of talent but just not using it the way they should be.

The Bears need about 3 to 4 O-line man because 4 or the 5 lineman will be retire in a year or two and if you can get some young talent in there quick they can have a year under their belt and learn alot from these great veteran lineman.

Lastly Benson is officially a bust as of now but I really don't think any running backs could gain more than 3.5 yards with the O-line we have (except AP, LT, and Westbrook). I wouldn't give up on Benson though because I have a feeling you let him go and put him behind a decent O-line he will have a couple 1500-1600 yard seasons. As of now let AP and Wolfe show what they got since Bensons out for the season.

Once again thanks for reading my blog and commenting.

Bradley is a bust. He's behind Davis on the depth chart for a good reason, and I'm not crazy about Davis this year either. Davis hasn't done much of anything on a consistent basis. The knock on Hester is that he isn't smart enough to learn an offensive or defensive system. That's why it looks like Turner's play-calling stinks. I'd like to see Hester in on 2-minutes drills and 3rd down situations only. The starting receivers are obviously overrated and it has shown this year. The drops by Moose and Berrian this season are inexcusable from quality #1 and #2 receivers. Ergo, Moose and Berrian are not quality #1 and #2 receivers. The rest of the supporting cast is weak at best. They don't scare anyone, with the possible exception of Hester.

Please don't include the tight ends in this group. The tight ends have their own coach and practice different skill sets than the wideouts. The Bears TEs have been great this year with very few exceptions. The wide receiving corps has sucked, and their play has really hurt their QBs and their team.

The Bears will never be able to sign 3 or 4 quality linemen for next season. Free agent linemen are too expensive, and drafting linemen is risky and they can take a long time to become true starting-caliber players. Garza and Kreutz are not going to retire in the next three or four years, and Tait could probably play for at least two more years. Miller and Brown should be on their way out. At best they could draft a tackle, pick up a free agent guard, then try to work Metcalf and/or Beekman into the lineup. But Garza has been the most consistent linemen for the Bears this year, so why replace him? I think they'll draft a tackle and take it from there.

Benson sucks. He's a bust. In three years, he hasn't learned how to catch a ball out of the backfield consistently nor has he learned to block or pick up a blitz. He's had THREE YEARS! What's he been working on in the offseason? What a waste of time and money he's been. He's going to go down in the annals next to Rashaan Salaam and Curtis Enis. Someone else might pick him up next year, but he'll be out of the league within three years. Mark my words.

FYI, at halftime during the Broncos game, they said the Bears had 27 dropped passes this year. I would expect that after the second half of the game that number surpassed 30. That's incredible. I would think that has to be the worst in the league.

BTW Anytime that I think about Angelo drafting any offensive player I start to sweat. But, I hope this Beekman kid pans out. From what I've heard he is a beast on the field. I'm curious to see him play.

Budz: Bears receivers dropped seven passes in that game alone... :(

I hear you about Angelo, but he did draft Greg Olsen. And that kid looks like the real deal!

Report Offensive Comment

I agree with the receiving corp has been terrilbe but look at other teams receiving corps and the Bears wouldn't look so bad if they didn't consistently drop the ball.
As for Benson he can be a bust with a good line cause last year the Bears offensive line looked really good and Benson picked up 600+ yards and 6 TD's in a backup role but as you can see this year the Bears O-line has really been terrible when Benson is getting hit almost befor he touches the ball and the QB has pressure in his face every play. The line gives the QB about 3 seconds and besides Garza how many lineman can you tell haven't got embarrassed by either getting pancaked, D-lineman just going right around them, or getting pushed into the QB. If you watch lineman you know when their do good is when they can get the first step on a D-linemen but the O-line is losing the first two steps. They really need lineman and I'm not sold on Kreutz playing two year since he been on the decline since last year.

ThisBudz4me got it right Angelos offensive drafting is terrible and the only reason he made good with Olsen is because he fell about 10-13 spots from where he was projected. The Bears have to draft at least 2-3 lineman this year and about 2 next year because not all of them will pan out with Jerry's drafting. And we know the Bears don't have the money to buy free agent lineman since they still have to try and get Tommie, Briggs, and Hester to sign contracts this offseason.
