This is in reference to Posnaski's article, where the Yankees are going to owe an incredible $150MILL to 8 players that will be in their mid to late 30's...in 2013. Yes, the Yankess have won championships under Cashman, but one has to wonder if he's any good at managing payroll and contracts? The Yankees have a lot of money, so I don't need to hear about how rich they are. The thing is, that money that is available can be spent wisley, and not handed to the "top tier" free agents the Yankees can sign ever year.
In my opinion, Cashman is a horrible GM. He doesn't know how to manage a team properly, which all starts at finances. He's costing the Steinbrenner's millions (and probably close to a billion to date) on frivilous speding. Cash reminds me of that 40-something year old lady, who is married to a rich guy with lots of money, and finds ways to spend hundreds of dollars a day.
He also doesn't have the guts or mental awareness to be a good GM. Cash was suckered into resigning A-Rod, after Boras had already cost the Yanks millions by opting out of the previous deal that had the Rangers on the hook for about 6-8MILL. Ontop of resigning A-Rod, Cash also gave him a raise. So, Cash pretty much cost the Yanks an extra $10MILL because he was tooa fraid to lose A-Rod. Handing Jeter $51MILL because of his legacy? Burnett's contract? Lets not talk about money he's thrown away in the past. I don't think Cash would be a winning GM with any other team. What do you guys think?
