Danny Espinosa and Mike Morse pounded Cliff Lee and the NL East leading Philadelphia Phillies 10-2 last night at Nationals Park. Espinosa took Lee deep twice for his 9th and 10thhome runs of the season and drive in 4 runs. Mike Morse went 3 for 5 including a double and 2 RBI. Morse lifted his overall batting average to .301. Former Phillie Jayson Werth also drove in 2 runs to help lead the Nationals offense to a 13 hit, 10 run performance.
Jason Marquis (6-2) grabbed his 6th win of the season, throwing 6 innings, scattering 8 hits and allowing 2 runs. Marquis added 4 strikeouts to his totals. Cole Kimball threw 2 scoreless innings of relief to lower his overall ERA to 3.24 since being called up and added to the Nationals bullpen.
Washington snapped another ugly skid with the win last night, winning just their second game in their last ten outings. The Nats are 23-31 on the season and sit 10.5 games behind Philadelphia and 2 games behind Florida to pull out of the NL East cellar.
In the minors system ...
Syracuse (AAA) lost 5-1. The Chiefs only mustered 6 hits, all coming from Matt Antonelli, Corey Brown, and Ty Hullett, each having 2 apiece. Bradley Meyers (3-1) suffered his first AAA loss, pitching 5 innings and allowing 8 hits and 5 runs. His AAA ERA rose to 4.15. IN 11 combined starts this season, Meyers is 6-3 with a 3.20 ERA and has recorded 59 strikeouts in 62.1 innings.
