Pat White, Denis Dixon, and Tim Tebow are all examples of why spread option QB's, i.e. athletic running QB's, are not good for one's team. They get injurred waaaay too easily sometimes (even one as big as Tebow). All three aforementionned QB's have done well, but their team wilted like a flower when they were injurred. Sure, they give a struggling team a boost, and they're good for high school, but they are too prone to injury. A QB needs to be protected, not tackeled several times a game.
It seems like teams come to rely upon an athletic QB. Like Vick and Dixon, a team will crumble without the guy for some reason.
An athletic QB is like a drug addiction: it feels good at first and can help certain problems but causes dependence and more harm than good in the end.
They're just so cool to watch and play with on video games. Still, in real life, an atheltic QB is not a good thing to have as a starter for too long.
The 2 QB system is becoming interesting to watch with one pure-passer and one athletic QB. Maybe if you start with a pure-passer, then the athletic QB doesn't have to rush as much. That would seem to work better b/c the athletic QB is not taking as many snaps and hits. That just seems like one too many QB's to have in the game though.

What about Fran Tarkenton? or Randall Cunningham? or Steve Young? or John Elway? All QBs that could run when they needed.

Sorry, I didn't mean to press twice. And Montana wasn't that fast, but he could scramble.

The running QB's were great for the old days of Fran Tarkenton or Roger Staubach. I don't think Ranall Cunningham is in the same league of greatness that Joe Montana, John Elway, and even Steve Young are in though. Those three guys could avoid pressure and get away from a pass rush, but they didn't run as much as Randall Cunningham or the spread option guys of today run it. Guys like Cunningham almost seemed to rely on their running ability instead of being a great passer. I guess I should change the title to: "Spread option QB's are no good to a team's long term success." I wouldn't tag Elway, Montana, and Young as athletic Qb's.
Deep South, I wasn't disappointed or surprised that UGA didn't make it to the NC game, but I will be disappointed if they don't make it to the NC game in '08 or '09.

The real problem with the "athletic" QB is that most of them are not accurate passers.Steve Young was a great runner when he had to and retired as the most accurate passer in NFL history.Vick and Kordel Stewart were very fast but sucked out loud as QB's because they could never deliver an accurate throw.Bet you Falcon fans wished you traded Vick to the Raiders(they would certainly be dumb enough to take him)and grabbed local boy Calvin Johnson!I guess it's more important to sell t-shirts than win games in Atlanta.
