There are five people in my household and there have been for the last few months. I have a younger sister, older brother, and my parents. When you think of three word phrases in a family of five what comes to your mind? Usually it would be "I love you", "Oh, shut up!", "Leave me alone", "What the h3ll?", or even "I hate you". Well, it's none of these.
I'll try to help you out. We live in Massachusetts. Now what do you think? "It's so cold"? No again. Another hint? Okay, we all love sports. Now you are thinking "The Red Sox", "The Boston Celtics", "New England Patriots", "Brady to Moss", "World Series Champs", or "Let's go undefeated". None of these either. The real phrase is the big three. I hear it all the time. Everyone in my house says it except for my little sister.
To tell you the truth, I prefer not to call the Allen-Pierce-Garnett combo the big three. I would rather bestow that name to three of the greatest players to ever wear a Celtic's uniform. Of course those three are Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. They accomplished what any Celtics fan could barely dream of. Garnett, Allen, and Pierce, let's call them the hefty three, yeah that's good enough, haven't made it halfway into a season yet.
Bird, McHale, and Parrish won three of the Green's sixteen championships. They had unbelievable chemistry that is nearly impossible to explain. They had a combined 28 all-star appearances as players for the Celtics. The hefty three have a combined 5 all-star appearances as players for the Celtics. I know that isn't really fair considering that Garnett and Allen haven't been on the Celtics before this year. That leads me to my next comparison. Bird and McHale both spent their entire careers for the Celtics and 14 of Parish's 21 seasons were with the Green. Pierce is the only member of the hefty three that has played for the Celtics before. He has spent his entire career with them.
The hefty three have been spectacular, however, and I'm not trying to diminish their accomplishments in any way, shape, or form. They overpowered Kobe and the Lakers, demolished the Knicks, and they transformed Boston back into a three sport city! They have proven, similarly to the Patriots, that they can blow you out and they can stick with you until the end and pull out a close victory. They have lead the Green to a 13-2 record going into December. That's the Celtics best record through the first month since who knows when. Garnett has been his dominating self, Allen has shot threes like he did before the surgery, and Pierce is playing like he has the past few years, just with a little help now.
To tell you the truth, I didn't like the Allen trade at first. I was thinking "we should build around Jefferson". I could not have been more wrong. You have to give credit to Ainge for his great trades. He has rejuvenated the Celtics and basketball in Boston. I was worried about Allen's ankles and I thought it would be better to use our draft picks to go into the rebuilding stage. Well, we skipped that stage and it worked incredibly well.
The entire Celtics team has been functioning well. Rajon Rondo has so many options he probably picks who to give the ball to before the play! Kendrick Perkins exploded offensively against the Lakers. James Posey is an excellent defender. And I already told you about Garnett, Allen, and Pierce. This Celtics team is a dream come true for me. I love basketball and I haven't seen the Celtics reach the NBA Finals in my entire life. Hopefully that will change this year.
